Slice some potatos into circles keeping skins on (healthier and quicker!)
Arrange on the bottom of a cass dish.
Slice an onion - chuck on top.
Spoon over half a standard size tin of baked beans.
Another layer of potato circles
Another layer of onion
Another layer of beans
LAst layer of potatos
CAn add layer of sliced tomato to top now to stop potato crisping too much or cover with foil.
Bake in oven 200c for 45 - 50 mins Never tried it in SC but im sure it would work.
If you dont like onion leave them out!
Can also use up left over veg in a layer as well.
MY kids love this for tea - often have it with just veg so even cheaper!!
Great! That's our dinner sorted. :T0 -
Hi chocolatepennyfarthing,
There's an older thread with potato bake recipes that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep all the suggestions together.
Another idea for sausages on nights when everyone is coming home at different times is Sausage casserole Just add the potatoes to the casserole.

I made the baked bean potato bake last night and it was delicious. I made a couple
of changes though. I was using quite a large dish, so one layer was a whole tin of beans, and for the other layer instead of beans I used a tin of chopped tomatoes. Plenty of seasoning. Then I grated some vegan cheese on top. Very tasty. I would say that it needs much longer than stated though. I always have trouble with potato bakes - they never cook properly, so I did it for 1 1/2 hours, and even though the potatoes were sliced as thinly as possible some were still a bit hard, so next time I think 2 hours would do it.0 -
Last night I made the nicest potato bake I have ever made so I thought I would share what went in it...
I sliced up 4 largish potatoes with skin on and layered them with a little garlic (i used half a clove), gruyere cheese (200g pack altogether inc topping), S&P. Then I poured over a small (not the smallest but second size up) pot of double cream over the top, added a splash of milk as it looked a bit low on cream. Popped a lid on and baked for hour and a half (mine always take ages) at 200c then sprinkled more cheese S&P over the top and back in the oven for 15 mins. It was lovely
I had more for lunch and will finish it for tea0 -
Thanks Justamum.. done the same for tonight but have added onion in each layer..0

Stupid question alert!!!
Do you cook the bacon first if you're adding bacon to this dish?
I know it'll cook in 1-2 hours in an oven but wondered if it needed to be cooked first for taste/appearance sakes?
I'm so having some kinda tasty 'tato bake for tea tonight...not sure what with though!I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....(it's part of my charm!)0 -

There is a much-loved potato bake here in France called 'tartiflette'. You start by frying small cubes of bacon (lardons - but cut-up slices are fine too) in a drop of oil until just beginning to crisp. Add sliced onions, cook slowly till onions are soft. Turn up the heat, and fry some leftover cooked sliced potatoes (or parboiled ones), and brown it all together a bit.
Then put in an oven dish, pour over some cream and top with generous slices of cheese. They use a special cheese here from the Savoie, but it is fine with Cheddar or anything else, as long as it melts well.
Finish off in oven or under a hot grill until the cream bubbles and the cheese has melted and starts to turn golden brown.
Very delicious but alas bursting with calories! Serve with a healthy green salad to balance out a little........"Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -

Forgot to mention that I put onion in too!
I had potatoes, onions, beans, potatoes, onions, tinned tomatoes, potatoes, sliced tomatoes, grated cheese. I like simple dishes which look after themselves!!
We had Christmas pudding with custard to follow!:D0
