i couldnt get it to work either.it just took me back to this thread.
No, it's not you. The link does just come here again.

So, until somebody knows where that was going, I eat a LOT of cheese & potato pie.

All you meed is mash and cheese. Quantities will vary, depending how cheesy you want it, but I've found that for weight 2 parts potato to 1 part cheese makes a REALLY cheesy one (e.g. 500g spuds/250g cheese).

Make the mash as you normally do, fold/mix in most of the cheese. Use the rest of the cheese to top it off.

Stick it in a pre-heated oven at the usual temperature (180-200 or so) for about 20-30 minutes, until the top cheese has melted and gone a lovely colour (colour is to your taste).

An alternative is to fry some onions until soft and mix those in too. The number of onions is up to you (I'd probably use 3 medium ones per 1Kg of spuds). I like to cut the onions quite large, but the size/shape of your cutting is up to you. If you're using onions, then simply mix these in with the cheese/potato.

It's easy. Quantities are up to you, so no rigid/set mix requirements.

For a quick & easy one, I've even been known to just microwave the cheese/potato mix, give it another stir around and eat it like that - or you can then top it with cheese and grill the top ofr 5 minutes.

I serve cheese & potato (and onion) pie with baked beans usually.

I am a new convert to cheese and potato pie. Got the recipe from my MIL after she made it for us - she just drops the onion in with the potatoe as they boil, saves another pan.

Very MSE, very OS, and very lazy/yummy :j

  • Hi,
Hubby makes a lovely meditteranean (sp?) crumble. Lots of med veg like aubergines, courgettes, onions, olives, peppers etc sauteed off then tinned toms or passata added to it. put into a oven proof dish then cover with a crumble topping thats made just like a sweet crumble but with parmesan in it rather than sugar. Then put it in oven (don't know on what heat, would guess medium) until topping goes brown and 'crumbley'. It's delish, especially served with salad and/potatoe wedges.
    HTH,
    Jess
  • Ok, i know this sounds pathetic, but i'm new to trying different combos in a potato bake.

My mum always used to do layers of potato, onion and cheese when i was little and i thought it was fantastic. Its 1 thing i have taken from her and always cooked it.

Though i recently decided to be a bit brave and try other things. A few weeks ago, i added sausages to it, it was lovely.

Last night while deciding what to cook for tea tonight and realising i had bits of ingredients all over the place, i decided to defrost some chicken and do:

    - Layer of potato as only had 2 baking ones left, layer of onion, mushrooms, bacon, chicken and then i had a chicken supreme packet sauce i think it was that just needed mixing up with milk (it should be used with just chicken and then you serve it with pasta)

It tasted beautiful, i was really impressed with it. One of the best meals i've had and so quick to make and cook. I was really proud of myself :rotfl:

This is one of those recipes like hash that you can vary as much as you like. Recipes like this are so useful as they don't depend on you having a particular set of ingredients in and allow you to make use of the foods that you have or that are cheap for you:)

I'd try layering the spuds with smoked mackerel. I've done something similar with smoked salmon and gruyere (not exactly cheap but really yummy). What about using corned beef, leftover roast meat, bolognese sauce for a sort of potato lasagne, smoked sausage, chorizo ?

For the sauce-a basic white sauce is really easy to make and you can keep it in the freezer. You can flavour it in different ways too -cheese, parsley, curry, mushroom or make tomato sauce instead.

  • Hi I was just wandering if anyone had any ideas on what I can make for tea?

I have got potatoes. and double cream that I need to use also a smidgen of mature cheese and lots of little vine tomatoes.

I was thinking along the lines of some sort of potato bake but I really haven't got a clue and I dont want to go shopping:confused:
