Have you got any onions and/or garlic? I would layer thinly sliced potatoes and onions and a little bit of chopped garlic, pour over the cream and decorate the top with grated cheese and sliced tomatoes. bake in the oven for about 30 minutes - Yum!0

Oooh - cheesy potatoes are absolutely delish!!! Similar to post above but, I don't add onions or garlic although it sounds yummy!
I peel and parboil potatoes. Slice thinly and layer in the following way: potatoes, salt & pepper, little bit of cheese. Keep layering until you get to the top, pour over double cream and sliced tomatoes and bake in the oven until golden brown. I'm sure you could layer the tomatoes too. This is a favourite in my house but we only have it every now and then due to the amount of cream and cheese!!Official DFW Member 716 - Proud to be dealing with my debts0 -

Well, here's a question for those who remember Leslie Judd, John Noakes and Shep! (Get down Shep!)
My Mum used to make a dish they made on Blue Peter hmm maybe late 70's very early 80's:o (I believe it was made by John Noakes), she's lost her copy and I want to make it as I have loads of potatoes to use up. So, that's where you lovely folks come in ...
It's a potato, cheese, tomatoes and onion bake thing with layers of the ingredients and a sauce. I have scoured the web and can find two people mentioning it, but neither of the pages can be found.
Please does anyone remember making it or have the recipe? I think it might be called the John Noakes Special?
Thanks in advance,
MrsB.

YES, I can help you. It's called Savory Surprise and has been a family favourite for years!! It's great budget dish...
The recipe is as follows:
2lbs potatoes - cubed
1x big onion - chopped
4x big tomatoes - chopped
4oz grated cheese
1x tbs flour
4x tbs parsley
salt & pepper
1/2 pint warmed milk
Grease a large ovenproof dish and mix potatoes and onions in it. Add flour and parsley, then all remaining ingredients. Pour in the warmed milk, dot the top with butter and put in the oven, gas mark 6 for one and a half hours. Often it might take a bit longer.0 -
Thank you!! You are a star!!
And yes, I remember that it does take a while to cook (Mum was not the greatest cook in the world, and often the potatoes were very hard)

A pleasure. In our household, it was always Dad who complained that the potatoes weren't soft enough!!! lol D)0

Arhhh that looks like my kind of comfort food! I will def try this one, thanks.
I also had a tried and tested Blue Peter recipe but have lost it, that was a potato cake. It was so moist and yummy yet heavy. I used to make it a lot as a child with my sister.
