OMG was just about to buy one of these. Can anyone recommend a American Fridge Freezer they have bought that is problem free?
  • hi, the ice maker wasn't working, so fixed that by turning they tray the correct way up, now the display panel doesn't seem to be working, and I can not alter the temperature and it seems to be showing error codes. Can anyone help as the fridge/freezer was working fine until I moved the ice tray.
  • I have a Samsung fridge freezer and noticed in winter that it was freezing up. I have since noticed that it is stuck now on about 15 degrees and will not move down. I have found out that it is one of the model numbers that is under the home visit recall program for having a dodgy part. Has the problem I have with the fridge temperature got anything to do with the recall issue or am I going to have to pay to have it repaired? I think it is a couple of months out of warrantee!

Well, yes and no. We bought a Whirlpool fridge freezer that worked perfectly well for 5 years before it started freezing stuff in the fridge, then the water dispenser packed up.

Fortunately we had taken out the extended warranty, so arranged for an engineer to come around (they used a local specialist company, who were great). To be fair, it took them rather a long time to sort it - six visits I think it was in the end (to cut a long story short, they replaced the front control panel circuit board, and had to upgrade the rear control panel to match the front, still had probs so they replaced door seals, variously blocked and opened vents, fitted a vent divertor modification, and then found out that the replacement front board they had fitted at the start was faulty), but we didn't charged a penny and is now all working

So, all in all, it has broken down but we didn't have to pay anything, and it seemed to last a fair while compared to the Samsungs. :D

WEll I am on callout number 5 or 6 for ours. (edit: it was callut 4, I exaggerated but that is cos I had to phone them CONSTANTLY to ask why they weren't coming and it felt like more) They always say they will call in 24 hrs and never do, despite umpteen calls to them it took 2 weeks last time:mad:. We have dismantled the panel and defrosted ourselves in that time as we couldn't cope any longer, losing food every few weeks. Was fine for last 3 years but last 3 months have been hell. Samsung have increased the warranty from 3 to 5 yrs but apparently it is a limited warranty so they are going to start being difficult very soon I fear. I really want to fight this but I can't cope with losing more food and having no fridge in the meantime, not in this heat. Supposed to be hearing back tomorrow - then the excuse will be waiting on parts AGAIN, we even had the volcanic ash excuse at one point as the parts come from Holland. I have at some points moved all my freezer stuff into the outside freezer and used the freezer as a fridge while waiting for them to arrive to fix. DH is away right5 now and I know I won't be able to get the panel back on if I take it off, much swearing ensued when he did it. All the engineers use a steamer when they come to us and it cuts through the ice nicely. Not on though is it? And I keep hearing from them all that there are "no known issues with this model". Oh really!!! Well I have found this thread now, I may be quoting it very soon.
Wish I had bought the Maytag I wanted 3 years ago but DH insisted I stick to budget:o.
Right I am off to price new ones just to make me feel like I am doing something. anyone got any good suggestions?

Browncow, I had my engineer visit to fix the dodgy bit and was told that mine was fine, that was about 2 months before it started going wonky. So I think it is not relevant. Either that or they hexed mine while they were here GRRR

You don't have to put up with this! My Samsung started giving trouble around2 years ago and Samsung extended the warranty to 5 years due to the 'known design fault'. The engineer fixed it and the fix lasted around 8 months and then it packed up again. Engineer fixed it again and that time it last just 6 weeks. Engineer fixed again anf the darn fault came back after another 6 weeks. The engineer then told me that, if it went wrong again, Samsung would not repair it again - he said 3 times is the limit!!!

Cue a VERY p***** off customer! Several irate calls to the helpline - and after I had seen an adveet it the Mail from Samsung regarding yet ANOTHER known fault - this time isolated incidents involving some of these models catching fire (there is another thread about this on MSE but I can't remember where!) - I convinced them that they were not going to get away with fobbing me off. I demanded a replacement - and I got it!!! A brand new fridge/freezer - newer, different model without the design faults - and the old one taken away. That was in January and, up till now, I'm a very happy bunny.

If you really stick to your guns - and also mention the fire hazard - you might be able to get the same results. I do know that several other people on MSE have got new replacements so a precedent has been established.

thanks for that tbw. I guess I am starting to wobble as I am losing food and can't take much more hassle. But I do feel I am being fobbed off and that if this is a known fault then they shouldn't be washing their hands of it within the 5 year period. I guess I better just take a brave pill and go for it. I just don't seem to get anywhere talking to Samsung. I think I might ask for a direct line number to contact them this time, I keep getting a different (very polite) person each time and having to go through the whole rigmarole again, don't they write this stuff in my file? Think I might do a bit of toetapping, I feel they should replace it after all this I just don't want another machine that is going to go wrong but it does seem to be the RS21 that is the problem. Just been looking online and it is hard to find exactly what I want in anything but a Samsung unless you want to pay stupid money. Really if they could just fix this problem permanently I would happily keep the fridge I have got. Well maybe not now.
