I just had mine delivered from Tesco today - first impressions very good. Fits my main requirements of freeviewHD, a USB port for video (inc divx) and music playback, and good quality!

(to recap KDL40EX403, 539 at tesco after 100 TV tradein and 10 discount, plus 1000 extra points)

Just remember when hunting out for bargains that a lot of the cheap ones out there are last years models... with technology moving so fast, there are features (freeviewHD for instance) that may be useful to have now to attempt to futureproof any changes (e.g. more channels going HD and SD being switched off).

Careful not to frighten people - there is absolutely no need to futureproof against SD being switched off.

Yes, more HD channels will be added, but there's no chance of SD disappearing for a long, long time - if ever.

How does the USB port work?

Has the TV got some sort of media player? For music playback can it handle playlists and for JPEG 's can you have a slide show or similar? I suppose it would be to much to ask to play music at the same time as viewing the JPEG's!!

Having had only a little play with it yesterday, I found the following things:
Not all USB devices work - when a memory device is found a message pops up telling you.
my pen drive did work, but my external hdd (3.5") didn't. I want to try a 2.5" (i.e. host powered) hdd, but only my dad has one of them that I know of and I wont be seeing him for a couple of weeks.

The menu system goes through movies/pictures/music, and when usb is connected, the usb will show up under each of these menus. From there you scroll through contents.

I only played with divx movie playback - some worked, some didn't, haven't got to the bottom of exactly which and why (the manual doesn't show divx as being a compatible file type, but the tv box has a divx logo). Music/Images not sure yet, unlikely to use them tbh. But I doubt you can do both at the same time. As for playlists... again not sure yet.

A cracking bit of kit though, can't wait to decorate the lounge and have this baby up on the wall.

Just had an email from Argos - the KDL40EX403 is selling for 639. There is an online voucher (through argos) for a £50 reduction on Sony tellys (up to £200 for the relaly pricy units), plus an extra offer of a £50 argos gift voucher for spending over £500 on any* telly. So you can get the smae telly for £540 in argos, but you do get the voucher, but you don't have to trade in an old telly. Offers apply to the other Sony tellys too..

I'm very seriously interested in the Sony Bravia KDL32EX403U from John Lewis. It seems to be coming in at £449 plus £100 scrappage plus a five year guarantee. Seems very good value.

Before commiting myself there are a few things I want to get straight in my head, and hopefully some of Irish members can advise me.

Is this television capable of picking up FTA digital broadcast from the Republic?

I'm assuming it picks up digital text from Freeview, but do you know if it will pick up digital text from the Republics DTT.

    Many thanks

ps when I go to Sony's website it gives model number KDL32EX403 but not KDL32EX403U - what does the 'U' stand for?

The U means UK - i.e. it has a 3pin plug on the end.
