What's the deal?[/title]
Sony's currently heavily promoting its £150 off trade-in deals for a huge variety of equipment. Often frankly it isn't worth it, but in a couple of cases such as a 40" Bravia TV it can be a cracking deal (if you want a Sony that is).
The deal also extends to e-readers, blu-ray players, digital cameras, headphones, mp3 players, DVD recorders and camcorders.

Where does the trade-in apply?[/title]
The deal's available at Comet, Currys, John Lewis, Sony Centres, Tesco Extras and some independent stores (see Sony website for stores).
For Comet, John Lewis and Tesco you can order online and they will pick up your old TV when they deliver your new one. Currys and Sony Centres don't offer the deal online.

How it works?[/title]
The item you must trade in must be of the same type - as defined by Sony of course. For TVs this is pretty simple - ANY old TV will do. However, for some of the other deals it's not strictly like-for-like; for instance, you can trade in an old dusty novel for a £20 discount on a Sony Reader.
If the trade-in deal is a good one it may be worth getting hold of a friend's old telly or even buying one for a few quid, as there aren't many restrictions on the items you can trade in.
Must I scrap Sony items? No. Any brands will be accepted.
How old must the equipment be? Age is irrelevant.
What condition must the old items be in? Equipment in a good or poor state will be accepted - even if it isn't in working condition.

How good does it work out to be?[/title]
We wanted to put this deal to the test by seeing if the prices after the scrappage discount beat the cheapest price available on the open market, so looked at a few different models.
Sony TVs (not Bravia)
Stock is thin on the ground for the Sony 40-inch LCD (model: KDL40EX403) and Sony 32-inch TVs (model: KDL32EX403) so do report back if you spot it elsewhere.
Sony also has a range of higher-spec TVs - the Bravia range - which it says offer enhanced quality picture.
What about non-Sonys?[/title]
Sonys are a very popular make of telly and this deal is very much worth checking out if that's what you're after. However it isn't the only fruit so if you aren't set on a particular brand, it's worth seeing how the best non-Sony prices compare to the prices above.

- 32-inch TV. £549 in-store at Tesco, and you get a £50 trade-in discount, bringing the final price to £499.
Is it beatable? Yes. Even though it's not doing the scrappage scheme, independent retailer CheapElectricals.co.uk list this TV for £449.99, with free delivery.
- 40-inch TV. This is listed at £649 in-store and online at Tesco, and a £100 scrappage discount is available, meaning a final cost of £549.
Is this beatable? Not that we have found, either by searching on the Megashopbot or by going directly to the retailers included in the Sony scrappage deal - though the Bravia deal below is cheaper.
Sony also has a range of higher-spec TVs - the Bravia range - which it says offer enhanced quality picture.
- 40-inch Bravia. Looking at the Sony KDL-40V5810 (which is also wi-fi ready), it is £599 in-store at Currys and Comet. Using the £100 trade-in, you can get it for £499.

- Cheapest 32 inch non-Sony - £199. Independent retailer Cheap LCD TVs has got a 32-inch HD-Ready model from Logik. Though you order online, you have to pick-up from depots based in five locations; Birmingham, London, Preston, West Yorkshire and Weston Super Mare.
- Cheapest 40-inch TV non-Sony - £369. The same online store (again with depot collection) offers a 40-inch full 1080p HD model from Evotel for £369.99.
- Cheapest 'brand name' 32-inch - £289. You can get a Toshiba 32-inch HD Ready set for £289 from online retailers 1stAudioVisual* and Multizone*, while you can get the same size set from Dixons* for £299.
- Cheapest 'brand name' 42-inch - £396. You can actually beat the size on offer from Sony and still pay less from a brand name. Pixmania* is selling a 42-inch HD-Ready LG telly for £396.90.
WARNING! Please think very carefully before buying any of these TVs
While some of these tellies are very good value, they still cost a fair whack; don't be tempted to buy if you can't afford it. TV technology prices tend to drop for the same thing, so saving up and waiting a while can often pay off.

Sounds a good deal but make sure you buy it at John Lewis or your local Sony Centre as you get a free extended guarantee and the quality of service is likely to be much better. Don't buy from Tesco or Currys - you won't get a free 5 year guarantee and their service is poor (IMHO)!0
-
Sony, JL, and M&S all do 5yr guarantee, but JL appear to be the only one that will pick-up your old TV when they deliver the new one. M&S require you to carry your old TV into store when you are ordering!!!! (That's what they told me).
JL also do free delivery (Sony charge for delivery).
- Who would have thought my 14" CRT TV would have been worth £100!!!0 -
I had a look at the Sony Bravia 40'' in Currys and was surprised at how fuzzy the picture appeared compared to other surrounding models. Anyone else have a view on the picture/sound quality of this model?Regards

JL are offering the Sony Bravia (don't know why the post implied it wasn't ) KDL32EX403U for £499...so £50 cheaper than Tesco.
So with the trade in it brings it down to £450, the same as the internet seller, but with a 5 year warranty (which I presume you don't get on the Internet).0 -
"Sony Bravia 40" plasma £499 via TV trade-in. Can you beat it?"
For accuracy the Sony TV's are all LCD not plasma
Damn fine deal though........

This is just a quick reminder and a 'heads up' to all of you who may not know about this. When considering the purchase of any new TV set, you may wish to make certain that it will pick up the new HD Freeview channels when they arrive.
In a few UK regions some of those new channels are already here BUT an "HD Ready" TV may not be equipped to receive them without an HD Tuner (or DVB-T2 tuner to be exact).
Without the HD Tuner in the TV set you will need another set top box to view the HD signals, so check with the store before you buy if this is important to you.0 -

We have just bought this TV today from John Lewis!! £450 (after trade in) was a great price for the spec, I thought - and JL's 5 year guarantee blew away any possible competition - Currys wanted to charge us £170 for a 5 year guarantee! I know M&S also offer 5 years but as a previous post states, they require you to bring the trade-in TV into store - can't see me hiking across town with an old 28 inch CRT telly somehow! JL will pick the old telly up when they deliver our new one next week0 -
So does the Sony Bravia 40 inch KDL-40V5810 have this circuitry to receive the HD freesat?0
-
dont forget the, independants, most offer inclusive 5year warranty, free delivery, personal service and pickup your old tv as well.Try getting one of the big boys to help if youve got a set up/operation problem0

For those concerned about hiking a TV back to M&S
I was in my Local M&S last weekend when I clocked a very good deal
Sony W580 32" at £499 (built in freesat)
now here is the ++point there was £100 trade in offer on this
(not sure if this was specific to M&S Liverpool, and can't seem to get the trade in to work on line) bringing the TV down to £399 (bargain if you ask me)
Now I was told you can trade in any size of to get the £100 off
the guy in the shop even showed us some prehistoric portable TV that some had brought in to part ex0
