Quite a bit of guilt here :o have been trawling second hand shops today for a bag, didn't find one but did find The Little Stranger, The Private Patient and an Agatha Christie hardback for a grand total of £5.99. In my limited defence they're all on my amazon wishlist and the Agatha Christie was a major bargain as I'm trying to collect the set and they're £20 new. Also had two potential book birthday presents arrive :o:o:o Got a fair way through Julie Walters' autobiography on the bus.

My eldest DS loved this book. It was his favourite boyhood book (he's 16 now) and he still owns his original copy which he won't let me give away - ever!

I've just finished 'Twighlight' by Stephanie Meyer. I wasn't all that impressed, to be honest. I might have enjoyed it more were I in the target age range (about 14, I guess). I read an interview with Stephen King somewhere where he was complimentary about it and explained that it was very pre-pubescent and explored the beginnings of sexual attraction and sexual relationships before the readers would be ready to progress into such relationships in real life. That seems a fair assessment as lots of the story is about heavy breathing, touching cold skin etc., but, TBH, it felt as though very little of substance happened in the book: the majority of it was descriptions of the weather, feelings etc. I have no idea what the film would be like (surely they would have to put much more action into it?!), and I don't think it compares favourably to the first books in other recent popular fantasy series (Harry Potter, His Dark Materials etc.). Naturally, they aren't aimed at the same age range, but I would be surprised if anyone is still reading the Twighlights in a few years based on this one (and no, I won't be killing myself to go out of the way to read the next one in the series), wheras I think that the other two will have considerably more longevity. The author will have made a mint in the meantime, though. There were places where the writing was cringingly bad as well, and many times I felt as though I was already ahead of the author's train of thought in terms of what her plotlines were/character motivation etc. It's a bit derivative, but the Twighlighters aren't likely to care about that.

    Clap rating: :T :T - :T (2 -3 claps)

My sister (20) loves the Twilight series and has bought the books for the younger one (13) although I can't see her becoming a fan. Keep on seeing them and thinking I should read one but so far haven't bothered and this challenge is giving me a good excuse to remain not bothered.

Am now two thirds through rebels and traitors - only 250 ages to go.

Finished The Secret Speech by Tom Rob Smith and TBH I'm glad to see the back of it. :( Its the sequel to Child 44 but not nearly as good. I was very disappointed in it but determined to finish it!;)
Started The Pirates Daughter by Margaret Cezair-Thompson, so far, so good!:)

From Stalinist Soviet Union to balmy Jamaica just by flicking a few pages - the wonderful world of books!:T

Finished Rebels and Traitors - :T:T:T and a half - its definitely an epic novel, covers the whole of the civil war from a royalist, a parliamentarian and a pauper's perspectve. Thought I was only reading for the historical info but soon realised I was getting interested in what happened to the characters.

    Julie Walters autobiog next.

One of the books I got today is 'Dear Customer Services' by Terry Ravenscroft. Anyone read it, it is hysterical :rotfl:

Looking out for the Girl with the Dragon tattoo, but no luck. Managed to get all four twilight books last year for £5, and the last one was a hardback.
