  • DC, it was me who did Latin and is multilingual.

I agree with you about Kate Long; first 2 books were good, Queen Mum wasn't good and I couldn't be bothered with this new one.

I don't really like Marina L either; had her first 2 books but couldn't get into them at all.
  • TY Flicker, are you just a natural at language learning ? Not suggesting it's easy by any means but once Latin was under your belt, dis the the others feel more natural ?

Shame about Kate Long, Bad Mother was good, but will give her a wide birth from hereon.

RE: Kate Long; I liked Swallowing Grandma as well as Bad Mother.

English is my 3rd language and I tend to be quite good at them thankfully.

Just caved in and bought In The Red from Greenmetropolis but I used money I'd earnt on the site to pay for it...

Woohoo another one bites the dust just finished Alison Weir's Lady in the Tower :T:T:T intersting but Weir is very dismissive of others and their theories. Will probably read some fiction next, maybe the scarily thick Rebels and Traitors by Lindsey Davies, but also getting very tempted by the thought of rereading David Starkey's Six Wives of Henry VIII. Hmm will probably end up reading something completely different!

Pickle I did a bit of basic Latin at school, would love to be able to speak Italian or Spanish though. Totally useless at French. Something to put on my Bucket List.

Just finished The Daughter Game by Kate Long, my honest opinion, don't bother
Three quarters of the way through it just turned awkward and unrealistic. I just didn't get it.

Next on the TBR pile 'We are all made of glue' Marina Lewycka.

Tis raining and ideal snuggle on sofa with book weather :)

French is my speciality (lingustically-speaking): did my degree in it and my Masters in interpreting and translation. If you decided to pick it up at any point, perhaps I can recommend some good grammar books to help. ;)

Am hoping to pick back up Spanish in September as l'm roughly first year degree level, and I would love to do Latin A-level as I feel a bit left out. It's not easy to find somewhere that does it, though. :(

Did I read correctly that English it your third language? If so, it's pretty darn good. What is/are your mother tongues? (*Pickle sticks nose it where it's not necessarily wanted* ;))

P.S. Still reading Martin's Thrifty Ways as don't have much time at the minute. Hurry up, Pickle!

Just finished "The Return" - thought it was ok - nit great. Started The Guernsey Literary Society et al, and Im loving it! I know its very popular witha lot of you so if you enjoyed it I would appreciate other recommendations of books in a similar vein. ( to put on my library list of course) My current pile from library is

The Secret Speech Tom Rob Smith ( loved Child 44)
    Blacklands
History of Tractors in Ukranian ( i liked Two Carvans)
The Calligraphers Daughter ( recommended on here)
Midwives Christopher Bohjalian ( an Oprah choice)

Not enough space to list my TBR (non library) but Im on holiday soon and will make a dent in them!

you will always be rich enough to be generous.

Well still 21 books in my TBR pile and a 'sinking' feeling that a few more will be given to me as birthday presents. Managing not to buy any at the moment so that's a plus.

Started Rebels and Traitors last night, seems ok not a period of history I know much about the Civil War; 50 pages out of 750 read!
