It depends on the book but anything over £1.49 I'd think twice to be honest, last time I bought books in a charity shop I got four for £6 so about £1.50 each ... haven't read any of them yet obviously!Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0

Naturally! Mine new ones will go up on the shelf to meet all the others I've not read yet:rotfl:
Thanks for your reply re prices tho, that's really interesting. Mind you, I find the cheapest has been my Mums church sale - 30p per book. It's only once a year tho, and this year I didnt buy any as I was trying to stay on the wagon!:rotfl:
you will always be rich enough to be generous.0 -
Hello
I was directed here by niccatw and as I am trying very hard to not buy 9 books at a time from Waterstones, I thought I'd seek moral support in here.
Charity shops in this neck of the woods charge about £1.50 for books, but once I picked one up that was marked 99p and they charged me £1.50. I did point out that it said 99p and they got a bit stroppy and said that I should be happy to pay the higher price because it was for charity!
And I've just finished reading '206 Bones' by Kathy Reichs.

That's not the point though is it Surbybird, they get it for nothing, what if you'd only had £1 on you?
Oh I know Jinty - jumble sales and car boots are definintely the cheapest places for books!Weightloss: 14.5/65lb0 -

I paid the higher price anyway because I wanted the book but it was a bad attitude.
I never think of jumble sales or car boots but I did grab a box of books from Freecycle a while back. I re-Freecycled about half of them and read the rest.

Around my way, it depends on which charity shop you're in - and where it is.
The Oxfam book shop is by far the most expensive! The second-hand dealer book shops are less expensive!
I did get a hard-back copy of Marley and Me for 50p in one though - which had been duly chewed at the corner by a dog :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:. I can't believe they didn't keep it.

I am being virtuous and have only bought one book. I'm also planning a mag subscription removal in May as I don't have the time right now to read magazines....and the money will go towards debt
I am pondering (as it's my birthday in exactly one month) whether to allow myself a birthday book....recommendations all received.** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
I do it all because I'm scared.

all the charity shops in my area charge about 2 pounds for a book:eek: it is cheaper to buy from amazon,if you take into account the parking and petrol,to far to walk ,did buy two hardbacks from the pound shop that look really good:o but sold two so a stalemate really:o.0

Charity shops round here vary wildly. I don't go in Oxfam anymore cos they're stupidly high. As a general rule BHF is £2 a book, RSPCA £1, Local hospice £1 often with 3 for 2 or bogof offers, Help the Aged I think is about £1.50, PDSA between 50p and £1. Up in Wetherby there's a hospice shop that does them 50p each bogof.
I've had books from Freecycle too but I've had to stop as part of this thread! I love car boots though, prices there are usually 25p or 50p 3 for £1.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -

I clearly need to move further north, as there are no charity shops down here selling books that cheap. Not fair!
