I love the Japanese houses, all clarity and no clutter. But I'm not that Zen, I need things, I actually use them :rotfl: will have a look at the reviews ;) I just wish I'd have more and better storage spaces:rotfl:
I know what you mean. Bear is not very Zen
  • That Marie Kondo book made me want to scream and throw it across the room:eek:. The only reason I didn't was because I often sell books that are still in great condition on Amazon and didn't want to damage it;)

She is very much in demand as the book sold within an hour of listing:j. The only reason I bought it in the first place was because the reading group on Mumsnet was in raptures over it because it had changed their lives;). It's not the first time I've been totally out of kilter with their opinions:o

I haven't read it but I think I'd want to throw it too :rotfl: I might get it out if I see it in the library
There's a whole thread on the OS board about it.
Glad you managed to sell it quickly :D

I am still trying hard not to buy books but sometimes I fail
Currently re-reading the Sherlock Holmes books in between books I own and anything I see in the library that looks interesting.

I'm exactly the same about buying books, mainly because I can't afford to:o. The mobile library is my new best friend:j

I often get Amazon vouchers though as payment for doing online surveys and that way I don't feel so guilty as I'm not spending real money;). That's how I funded buying the Kondo book and then by selling it on I even made some real money in return. That's the only good thing about it IMO:rotfl:
  • Glad to see some other people disagreed with Marie Kondo's advise for getting rid of stuff.

Second book of the year finished - One Summer: America 1927 by Bill Bryson. Worth a read but definitely his least entertaining book yet. Could be because I wasn't overly interested in Charles Lindbergh or Babe Ruth and it didn't include many sections were Bryson inserted some wit or his own commentary on the situation. There were a few interesting sections on the spread of radio and television, as well as the Americans' reactions to (Italian) immigrants. It could have done with a more thorough editor. There were several sections where he repeated himself and every male mentioned under the height of 5'6" was described as "slight".

Next up for me is Cafe in Berlin - it's a beginner's German reader and so far it's been a bit too simple to enjoy, though it is boosting my confidence in my language ability.

And now a few questions which are book related so I hope they stay on topic.
    • Has anyone tried selling books on Amazon? Is it really as simple as setting up a seller's account and saying "I have this book"?
    • What are people's thoughts on Kindle Unlimited or the Kindle Lending Library that comes with Prime? Are they worth the money?
    • I have an old Kindle (the type with the buttons on the side to turn the page). For those who have Paperwhite or Voyage, are they worth the upgrade? What's better about them that makes them worth the additional price?

  • I needed to finish my first book of my GoodReads challenge two fridays ago, but I finished my first one yesterday. Not worried about it, as I'll catch up just fine soon enough. :)

Reading The Tiger Warrior, by David Gibbins, it's a library read, going slowly, but hopeful of finishing it this week.

rawdinosaur I have a Kindle fire. My friend gave it to me 3 years ago. It was his mum's and he has one. I think he pays either £7-£9 per month and we can do so much on here.
I always download their free films and books that can be read/watched offline. You can also pay for them if there is something specific you want.
I can access the net and do all my internet browsing on it.
It was a Godsend when I'm abroad as I use it to keep in touch with family and friends via fb and email, read my books....less weight in you luggage....and I even watched films/programs on YouTube in my hotel room as their tv wasn't anything to speak of.:)

I don't have any pc's at home or internet access, and its so handy I just pop it into my bag and can use it wherever there is WiFi.:D

It suits me and does everything I need it to do. I would be lost without it.
    Hope that helps.:A

FunRum, I've gifted one to myself on Black Friday - the best thing I bought for myself ever! Most books I have on there are free amazon downloads- there's a link to them on the forum (I just gave in to temptation with 2 paid ones but so much cheaper than printed copies because I had wanted them for a while). I love watching stuff on it, video and sound is brilliant even if you don't want to use prime, all TV players work on it for free if you have wifi. I love it, did not expect to get so much fun out of it after a rubbish android tablet experience :rotfl:
Rawdino - I don't think the kindle library is free but there is a free trial period, I've not done that yet.

Yes, I sell books on Amazon a lot:j. Maybe it's not quite as simple as you said;) but I find it a whole lot easier than eBay and far less time-consuming.

For one thing it's more 'anonymous' than eBay in that after you've listed your books you have no contact with the buyer apart from sending the book when Amazon email you to tell you it's sold. Makes a change from eBay where I was forever having to answer emails etc.

Amazon act as middleman for payments and take payment directly from the buyer. After selling fees are deducted Amazon reimburse the seller with what's left plus £2.80 for postage. Watch out though as seller fees are pretty high:mad:. Most books cost £2.80 to post, unless you are lucky and have a thinner book which will go as a Large Letter for less. You get £2,80 credit regardless. On the downside, if it's a huge, heavy coffee-table type book it's usually not worth selling as you'll still only get £2.80 postal credit and it will cost much more than that to post.

You have to send the book before you get the money though. Amazon pay on a cycle and it could be several days before you receive it. You can request payment immediately after you've dispatched the book but it still takes 3 to 4 working days to arrive in your bank account.:(

Books can stay listed forever so you don't have to worry about end dates or relisting.

I always write a short detailed condition description of all the books I sell so the buyer knows exactly what they are getting. There can be a world of difference among books described as Very Good! There's space to do this in your listing.

Incidentally, when you start to list a book you'll see all the other copies that are for sale. It's up to you to pitch your price so that you are not giving it away (beware 1p book sellers;)) or asking a ridiculously high amount. Buyers tend to trawl down the list (which is arranged in price order) and choose the best example based on price and condition.

I'd heartily recommend it. Have a little play on the site and see how you get on. I've sold 3 books this weekend (I'm only a personal seller not a business) but sometimes they hang fire for months. It's not the quickest way of making money:rotfl:

    Good Luck:beer:
