Blimey, I haven't been here for a while. So the last book I read was The Last Gospel by David Giddins. It's a slow read and the last 5th of the book was the most interesting bit. Having a break from his books at the moment, so in the meantime I've read the following:
- Moving Pictures, Terry Pratchett
- Reaper Man, Terry Pratchett
- Witches Abroad, Terry Pratchett
- Small Gods, Terry Pratchett (finished today)
Now on to Lords and Ladies, by Terry Pratchett, not that there is a theme or anything...
This also means that I have read my 52 books for my Goodreads challenge and will most likely beat it once again, as I did last year. For me this does help, I plan my to read list before the New Year starts and the Goodreads challenge helps me to keep my mind focussed on reading the books. I don't feel that I rush them because of it.
My tips for not buying books? Well I'm not brilliant, as I've just purchased 3 new books only recently... However, using your local Library is great, it's free and you can tend to find most books you are wanting to read. My online library account offers a reservation service, so I will put new books on the list ready for when they are released, such as Ben Aaronovitch's newest offering Hanging Tree, which is due for release in June 2016.0 -
I don't know if anyone on here likes doing competitions but Caboodle (National Book Tokens) run some good book-related ones. The latest is a really brain-taxing book titles one but the prize is a year's supply of books:j so well worth the aching brain;).
I think you have to register on the site first to enter but here's the link to the comp:

With a tiny bit of help I managed to do the quiz last year but sadly I don't have the time just now to do it
A couple of weeks ago I started You are not like other mothers by Angelika Schrobsdorff. I enjoy reading it (I keep on going back to the wars, must be working on some subconscious family history...) but it is a big book and it will keep me going for a whileFirst they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0 -
Wrote a post this morning and could have sworn I'd posted it but it seems to have disappeared:mad:. Oh well, it wasn't anything important.
Just to say I collected The Little Red Chairs by Edna O'Brien from the library van. I'd ordered it pre-publication so have been waiting ages:eek:. It's her first novel for 10 years so I can't wait to get started on it. Best of all it's a brand spanking new hardback. Bliss:j0 -
Finished Lords & Ladies over the weekend and then promptly started Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett. This one is about the Nightwatch.0

Hi everyone, not had much time for reading recently but finished Angels Flight by Michael Connelly and really enjoyed it - his books are definitely getting better as the Bosch series progresses.
I was gifted two books from my wishlist over the weekend, and also given another 4 as pass-alongs, so my shelf is full again! Next up is Liane Moriarty's Last Anniversary, which I am very much looking forward to.MFW 2017 #123 2018: £1,852.64/£39,200 (4.7%)0 -
Well, the Edna O'Brien has had to wait a bit (I've 3 weeks left to finish it before it's due back but won't be able to renew as someone else has put in a reserve on it:()
Got sidetracked when doing a bit of tidying and discovered Larry's Party by Carol Shields languishing at the bottom of a box of Christmas tree decorations that I'm donating to a local school. How did that get there?:o
Had a quick read of the first two pages and I'm well and truly hooked so that's what I'll be reading this week:j0 -
Men at Arms has finished and we're now on to Soul Music. That's going to be the last Pratchett for a while, as I'm missing the next one in the series.
I'll probably read my Rivers of London comics (5 of) by Ben Aaronovitch.
In other news, absolutely smashed my Goodreads Reading Challenge 2015, having read the 52 books I pledged to read. Will probably keep the same number for next year, as I've got a couple of large books to read.0 -
I'm three quarters of the way through The Little Red Chairs by Edna O'Brien, her first book in a decade. Well worth the wait, I can't recommend it enough:j. Due back on the library van soon but will definitely take it out again in the future as, unusually for me with any book, it will be a definite re-read:j
I haven't read any reviews of it yet and have deliberately not done so as they're so often completely the opposite of what I thought of a book myself:o. On many occasions in the past a series of poor reviews has put me off even trying some books but now I just do my own thing and make my own mind up after I've read something;).
Unless I'm totally out of kilter with the rest of the reading public:eek: I'd be very surprised if this Edna O'Brien book gets the thumbs-down;)0
