Your reading group sounds great:T. It's a pity there are no reading groups of any kind anywhere near where I live out in the sticks:eek:

I'd hate to have to slog through something really boring:eek:, Our Mutual Friend by Dickens for example that someone mentioned recently as their latest book club choice.

We all decided to read Our Mutual Friend.... Fortunately we are able to veto books that we would struggle with and can I say OH and I are really enjoying it... So not a slog of us... Now science fiction would be
As a dear MSE friend says “keep plodding” or
What does the saying say.... When life hands you lemons, make lemonade
Or as my Mum would say, brush yourself down, tomorrow is another day or
Fake it, to you Make It

Please say hello my new diary: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6578460/still-dancing-to-blow-the-debt-clouds-away

I'm so glad you are enjoying Our Mutual Friend:T. I haven't read everything by Dickens and some I've really loved, others less so. I just didn't get on with OMF for some reason (my loss:o) and wouldn't want to have to read it again. I'm a big Thomas Hardy fan but I know a lot of people find his books hard going. It's nice that the classics are being read in reading groups, most of the ones they choose at my SIL's group seem to be the latest bestsellers. She says when it's her turn to suggest/choose the book it will be a classic:j

I'm with you on the Sci Fi;)
  • Just read a Linwood Barclay, Never Saw It Coming that a friend passed on. I love his books, have read a few but am pleased to see there are quite a lot still to read and all in the library catalogue:j

Have decided to stop doing reading challenges. Instead of being fun I found I was getting stressed. I'm quite a quick reader but found I was rushing through books just to keep up and tick another one off my list:(. Some challenges have been great because I had to try different genres such as fantasy, horror, sci-fi and graphic novels but I didn't enjoy them all and sometimes gave up on books I've hated:o. Reading should be fun not a chore. So I won't be joining any reading challenges in 2016:j. What a relief!

Going to start Hollywood Wives by Jackie Collins next:)
  • Carbootcrazy i Hope you still pop into this thread as its lovely to know what others are reading. I don't see this thread or good reads as a chore I use them to keep a record of what I've read over the years and get ideas of what others are reading and enjoying but I can see what you are saying reading should definately be a pleasure.

Just preordered two Christmas books the new trisha Ashley and Carole Matthews ones.

    Thanks, Mrs-M:T

Yes, I'll definitely be staying on this thread. This one is really nice and supportive. Definitely a pleasure and through it I've come across all sorts of new titles and authors:j.

The type of challenges I mean are the ones like the Goodreads one this year where you have to read 52 books this year from specific genres, or on certain topics such as 'a book that scares you'; 'a graphic novel'; 'a book at the bottom of your TBR list' etc. I liked the idea of it when I first saw it but found it left me too little time to read what else I like. I'm a bit of a magpie and pick up books that just grab me at the time when I see them in the library etc. I don't like to plan ahead that far and decide in January what 52 books I'll definitely be reading during the year to fit the challenge criteria.

Next year's Goodreads challenge is just a continuation of that sort of thing so I won't be joining. I'll definitely take some ideas from it though, as I have been doing with this year's:j, but not commit myself to doing the whole challenge in the time span. I seem to have too much else going on in my life at the moment that's stopping me reading as much or as often as I want anyway so reading-challenge stress is the last thing I need:eek:

Murder in the Kitchen by Kennedy Chase.

Another quick and easy read which was just as well as I was reading it in the middle of the night on Saturday as I just could not sleep!! It was fun and lighthearted murder mystery with a good twist at the end. It is the third in a series so I think I may get the other two just cause they are great pick up put down books which I find quite useful for work, teabreak lunchtime etc.

Anyway off to ponder what I may have a go at next. I have a few Maggie Sefton's to go to finish the series but think I will keep them for xmas reading.

Have half term next week so may get into something a bit meatier like a 'historical' novel as I like to read them fairly quickly so I don't forget who is related to whom lol.
  • Thanks for that, Maisie M. Will see if I can track down a Kennedy Chase book in the library catalogue:T

Reading shadow by Michael morpurgo Really well written and interesting book, it will be donated to the local school once I've finished told the teacher I've once got about 6 more by him to read and donate to her, she's really pleased as the children love them.

  • Book three done, now on to number 4 - The Shadow Rising. Oooooooh, what an ominous title! :p

Book four finished today, so you'll never guess what I picked up next! ;)

Book five is The Fires of Heaven. It was around this stage that I stopped reading the series first time round (or it might have been book six), but that's certainly not going to happen this time! Loving reading the series again, and will probably go all the way through.
