Just finished Upstairs at the Party by Linda Grant and can honestly say I enjoyed it as much as anything I've ever read in my life:j. Was loaned to me by a friend and after finishing it I felt so sad, not for the book's outcome but because it was finished. I've had to give it back today, she got it from the library and it's due back, but I'll definitely be rereading it and anything else I can lay my hands on by this very talented writer.
It struck so many chords with me as the main storyline was based in the early 1970s and a group of friends who met at University. I was there around the same time and have the T-shirt to prove it. Showing my age now:o. The fictional location is obviously York and this wonderful book revived so many of my own memories, good and bad. It might not appeal to those of a different generation but the writing is so good that I'm sure it would hook you and not let you go:j.
Have now found that Jeffrey Archer book of short stories that I seem to have been rabbiting on about for weeks:o so will be making a start on that tonight if I get a few minutes to myself.0 -
I've finished the eBook by Marian Keyes, it really didn't take long and was more about fleshing out the Walsh family as well as giving you excerpts of her other books.
Turns out I managed to reserve the book I wanted that's not been returned to the library since 2014! Whoops! So have re-ordered it, so while I wait I'm reading Marian Keyes little Penguin book called Nothing Bad Happens in Tiffany's which she wrote as part of Penguin's 70 years.
Hoping the library book turns up soon, as the next things on my reading list as a little batch of Terry Pratchetts and I'd like to read those in one go without a break.0 -
Hello everyone!
I have been ridiculously busy but have stills managed to fit some reading in. Alas, I'm not sure I'm going to remember all the books I have read but here goes:
The Sweet Poison Quit Plan by David Gillespie (brilliant - you have no idea how bad fructose is for you!)
Total Recall by Arnold Schwarzenneger (his autobiography: it's pretty astonishing - he's had quite a life and most of the really interesting stuff is before he became famous. )
The Shepherd's Crown by Terry Pratchett (the last ever Discworld novel. I'm devastated!)Please call me 'Pickle'
No More Buying Books: ???
No More Buying DVDs: ???
NMB Toiletries ??? and I've gone back for my Masters at the University of Use Ups!
Proud to be dealing with her debts 1198~

Morning all
Been away from the computer to post.... but have been reading on line, and infact done rather a lot of reading:
From a recommendation on here - The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake - Aimee Bender. I did have mixed feelings about it, but did read to the end. In essence I didn't really like the writing style, and too many stories lines drifted away...
Overcoming Anxiety - Helen Kennerley - a work book, it was good if you have had CBY one to one and wanted something to read to consolidate your understanding.
Singled out - How two million women survived without men after the first world war. by Virginia Nicholson - found this a fascinating enjoyable and informative read. I knew a lady who ended up in this position, and to think about how the world changed for women at this time made me think how lucky we are.
Death Instinct - Jed Rubenfeld - a murder mystery hooked to the end, fictional and historical figures and times mixed together - Freud, New York and Europe just after WW1. Kept me hooked to the end.
Really pleased 3 books to add to my read.unread total. Two going to the charity shop.
Several books being read at the moment incuding Our Mutal Friend by Dickens on Kindle as our book club book !As a dear MSE friend says “keep plodding” or
