  • I finished The Hobbit, now on to The Snow Chid (which was a naughty IN from the buy one get one half price offer in Waterstones. The other book was a present for my dad if you were wondering...)

    Hi all!

As you can see, I’ve not been around much due to moving: it has all been busybusybusy at Pickle’s new HQ, which has meant not much time for reading (and lack of internet access has meant it harder to get on here, too). I have just finished Jo Brand’s ‘Can’t Stand Up For Sitting Down’, the second instalment of her memoirs. It was pretty good fun, but I think I prefer the first. I’m sure I read something before that, but I can’t quite remember what. I’ll be back to let you know when I do!

Also, a great big welcome to all the newbies! :D As you can see, it can take quite a while for us to read books, so this isn’t always the fastest moving of threads, but we all eventually come back and let each other know what we have been doing (very eventually, eh, Ruby_Eskimo! ;) ). Pull up a pew, help yourselves to tea, sandwiches, cakes or biscuits and join in with the reading!

And WBQMS? Don’t think of it as failing. Just promise not to buy anything you don’t strictly need and try again…we all have a wobble sometimes….it just means you have to read a bit more! (What a pity! ;) )

  • Well I appear to be on a roll now Pickle!

Finished The Snow Child and now reading 1Q84. It's a monster of a book (parts 1 and 2 are about 1000 pages and part 3 is another 500 or so) so I'm debating whether I should take it on the train tomorrow or pick up something else to start...

Anyway, as I probably won't be on again beforehand, wishing you all a very merry christmas!

Firstly, thanks yet again to the delightful ms Pickles for this thread.

Secondly, it is a pity that most contributors are ladies..........c'mon dudes, show them that we blokes read books as well!

Thirdly, just re-read "Cold Comfort Farm" languishing for 40 years on the shelf. Even funnier now than when I first read it. Hunt it from your shelves and enjoy.

Lastly, Lee Childs should be ashamed. This fine writer and storyteller allowed Tom Cruise to be Jack Reacher! I despair.

  • Terryw i'm so glad you said that. Tom Cruise has no business playing Jack Reacher!!

Well i've been good and stuck to my not buying plan however my to read pile hasn't been reduced at all after going to the library with my little girl and coming home wih 2 books for myself!

Hoping to have them both finished by the end of the year.

Need to give serious thought to my Goodreads challenge figure for 2013.

  • well so far I've not finished any books but gained 2 for Christmas, hopefully once Christmas is over I can relax and recover with a few books.
  • Santa has brought me one more book so I shall have to find space for it on my shelf. I really need to have a count up and get reading some of my old ones. I've also got £40 in book tokens for Christmas which I can't ignore! I may get some crafty/recipe books rather than novels though. Will have to see what takes my fancy in the shop!

I haven't posted in a while and I've had vouchers for both my birthday (2 weeks ago) and Christmas, I've bought *quite* a few books.

I currently have 900+ books to read on my kindle :0 (I honestly don't know how it got to be that much or if I didn't have a kindle where they would be kept!)
Using my phone to post - apologies in advance for any typos

I have been pretty good at reducing the number of books I have in my house (must have been well over 1000 at one stage!) so now I have whittled it down to those I want to read I am determined to work my way through them all. Over the next few days I'm going to count them up and I will start from there. Wish me luck - I think I might need it! :D

Looking forward to coming back to chat about books with you all!
  • hope everyone had a good christmas and the bookshelves ddnt swell too much.

i finished how to be a brilliant teacher yesterday was very impressed by it but not sure how much it will assist me in supervising the playground but so great tips and advice and a few good giggles in it.
