Well done blindtoast - I still struggle to walk past 'Stones even though I almost never buy from them. If I ever get to the bottom of my to read pile One Day will be added to it.

I really really struggled to read Dear John, I knew from friends what it was about and that they found it an emotional read - but as a military 'wag' I was in tears for what felt like almost all of it!

Thank you Scubaangel. Waterstones is my very favourite shop (apart from 2nd hand book shops, which are even more dangerous!) but like you I rarely buy from them - (apart from in the sales at Christmas or if they have a really nice book on offer) but it is a constant temptation and one I can't ever quite walk past!

Oh dear - I should have realised "Dear John" might be emotional from the other things he's written (which I've not read but I have watched the films that have been made based on the books) but it didn't really cross my mind. Think I've only ever cried at one book so hopefully I'll be dry eyed by the end of it! I am finding it to be a quick read though - already 100 pages in.

  • So far I have 4000 pages to read on my 'Writing and Reading the Essay Fall 2004' with an unknown number of books yet to be read; theoretically to be read without buying more (though Academic texts are my big temptation due to their scarcity and qaulity).http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/2071616?shelf=to-readso hopefully thus far I can do the Challenge.
    *uncertain*.

  • I like Amazon because I have saved up numerous Academic Texts on my Wish List (2000 strong plus!!) so at least it makes them easy to buy.
Academic books are vastly overpriced and I prefer to pay as little as possible for as high a qaulity as I dare.
I have to diversify to other bookshops like Play etc but very skeptical whether I would be provided for [or not] as the case maybe.

  • My temptations are online shopping. So easy to click.. offline bookshops less tempting and prices are too high. Online is more of a market to judge. Popularity of item raises price.

    Hi all,

I've just finished 'My Sh*t Life So Far' by Frankie Boyle.

It's intelligent, albeit pretty cynical, and fairly far removed from mainstream media thought. Just ignore the shock jokes and crudeness.

It's good to see that not everyone sings from the same hymn sheet: we need people like Boyle to remind us not to fall for vapid media hype once in a while.

I might leave this one on my bookshelf for a while instead of selling it: flicking though it at random intervals might not be a bad thing.

I've also just finished 'Saturday Night Peter' by Peter Kay. (How's that for reading? They were both on the shelf of book club at work so I ended up picking them up, starting on, misplacing the other and then alternating until one was completely finished and the other one left all on its own.) It was funny: it took me a few chapters to get into it, but once I was into it, it was really good.

Now I really AM going to read Dante's Inferno. Honest!
