Ladies, I've only been counting fiction books in this challenge, but at the rate I'm going I think I'm going to have to start counting non-fiction as well.

I just received a book ordered last week to help me with a college course. It's a brilliant book - very informative - but also very expensive. I'm lucy that I know about the megashopbot and managed to get the book (worth just under £50) for £28-something. However, on reflection I'm near the end of the course, and when I went to the college library, they had a copy there I could lend (I think my reasoning was that if they didn't have the copy left by the time I got there, that I would be screwed, so if I ordered it, it would arrive in time to nip that problem in the bud, if it ever arose). I want to do the course that follows on from this next year, and if I do (and if it runs) it will be invaluable for that, but given that I may have to do another course on an unrelated subject instead, I may not get to use the book as much as could justify the expense in the near future.

I also wanted some workbooks earlier in the year. At the time, they seemed the most important thing ever, but since I got them and have been busy doing other things and haven't got round to using them. I hope to use them to their full over the summer, when college is finished, but that's still more money I've forked out for things I haven't really used properly.

As someone trying hard to get rid of excess things that I don't need, I shall have to think twice and even three times about buying more non-fictions books, as well as the story variety.

Crikey. Whodathunk I'd ever be this concerned over how many books I buy? I might get to the end of the pile one day! ;)

I have really and truthfully been trying to follow Ms Pickle's advice and not buying books. However, my fine relatives have now seen the light and, rather than silly smellies and socks, have given me book-tokens for presents - they don't count do they?

One of my lifelong favourite books is The Long Walk by Sławomir Rawicz which I first read when I was about thirteen. It has recently "inspired" the film "The Way Back"- the story of a bunch of guys who escape from a Russian Gulag and walk 4000 miles to India. I re-read my copy every couple of years - it is well dog-eared now. As an aside, it is well recommended as reading material for teenage lads, who perhaps don't have as much reading choice as young ladies.

Anyway, a lady called Linda Willis recently brought out a book entitled,
"Looking for Mr Smith" in which she chronicles her attempts over the years to ascertain the veracity or otherwise of this great survival story. Naturally, I bought the book at Christmas with a book token, and I am re-reading it for the sixth time. It really is superb - a combination of detective story and research written by someone who the same love of the "The Long Walk" as me.

In a strange way, "Mr Smith", reminds of another old favourite book.
This is "The Daughter of Time" a 1951 novel by Josephine Tey which deals with research to ascertain the truth about the murder of the princes in the tower by Richard 111. Although it is novel, this book changed the thinking about Richard as being merely a murdering old hunchback!

I am sure that older posters will recall the "Daughter of Time", but again the book is an old friend of mine and excellent reading rather than spending money on new books in the spirit that Ms Pickles suggests.
"If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools"
Extract from "If" by Rudyard Kipling

Finished an ebook worth a read if you can find it as a freebie download this morning on the train, A Child Al Confino by Eric Lamet, wouldn't pay the current £11 for the ebook version though

Its about a Jewish boy growing up during WW2, and follows him and his mothers enforced travels around Europe from Vienna, to France and Italy where they were internees confined to a small remote village.
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

Wowee, LPS - your own bookblog! :D And people send you books to review? *Blinks extra hard to make sure she read correctly* I can't believe it!

Glad to hear that you are no longer a student (although as a fellow other-language-speaker I'm happy to see that you had daliances with other languages while there ;)) and HOW MANY books have you reviewed? Double OMG - I couldn't believe it!  (How long has your blog been running?!) I'll make a point of dropping by from time to time, so I fully expect you to make me a cup of tea and point me to a squidgy chair. ;)

Well done! (And where did you get that lovely page header for your blog?)

  • Thank you Pickle!!
I've been blogging since February, so not too long really! I can't believe thats me finished with uni, it's still not quite hit home yet! Graduation is next month, and I should be finding out all my exam results anytime really.

As for the header, it's actually a layout I've used that someone else designed, there is a link at the bottom of my blog taking you to her website, she has some lovely ones up!

According to goodreads (name on there is Littlepinkstars44 Reads) I've read 118 books so far this year, I have no idea how many of those I've actually reviewed yet :o

Currently working away on my to be read list, about half way through it at the moment. Still have to create lists for library books and Kindle books, but I might wait till tomorrow for those as this one is starting to annoy me already lol!

I think you are doing brilliantly. I've been really slow so far, but have picked up steam a bit in the recent past. I'll have to pause for a it as I have a lot of homework and stuff to do at the minute, but I hope to make a plan and do some serious blasting through books after that. I'll still have some way to go to beat you, though! :rotfl:

Wowsers littlepinkstars - that's a lot of books, although you seem to get through them pretty quick!

Been reading this thread tonight and just signing up to say Hi! I read lots, but mainly pure chick lit - would like to broaden my horizons a little! I love Catherine Alliott, Marion Keyes etc but am trying others- ordered The Snowman tonight which I am excited about! I have read the last few pages and am using Amazon wishlist to record the books I would like to read :D

I see some of you are on Readit Swapit, I have signed up tonight - wooo! I am a little nervous as I think people won't want to swap with me as I am new. I would love to swap with people from here if you trust me!! my username is the same and if you say yes will have a little looky through your lists!

Enjoy the reading ladies and gentlemen :)
