I'd love to do that too. It never occurred to me before, but if the place burned down the biggest expense would be to replace my books. Just on a quick adding up of shelves I must have at least 500 books. How much was the software?
Hi, the software was £25 for the books database, the scanner was on offer at £60 when I bought it. You dont need the scanner, you can type in the ISBN, but its slower that way. The inner nerd in me just couldnt resist it. You can show which books you have read, which are on loan, where you bought it yetc.Debt at 1/1/11 £7,049.75, now £6,682.12 at 9/3/110 -
This may be heresy to say in a thread like this, but I'd love an ereader to read ebooks on. Would have to have a colour screen, maybe about 10 inches, so I could read comics on it too. The ipad looks ok but not sure about the connectivity. Might plump for the HP Slate, need more details first.
Someone in the thread said they'd like to get into reading graphic novels, let me recommend "Pride of Baghdad" by Brian K Vaughan. Its based on a true story about when Baghdad zoo got bombed in 2004, and some lions ended up roaming around the city. Good stuff!Debt at 1/1/11 £7,049.75, now £6,682.12 at 9/3/110 -
have just joined bookmooch - thatnks to those who mentioned it.
Just to join in - Iloved Rebecca and A town like Alice and time travellers wife too.
My faves are probably anything by John Irving, eg cider house rules ( film did not do justice to it - only told a fraction of the story), or Peter Carey ( true history of the Kelly Gang)
My best time was when I had a saturday and sunday job in a bookshop - I should have stayed there!Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
I read The World According To Garp and it left me cold, when a kid can die and you don't realise for 10 pages it doesn't say much for the book! Are his others better than that one? I've heard good things about them.
I loved Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey, and I've got Illywacker. I want to read the Kelly Gang one at some point too.
I'd love an e reader, but my biggest problem with them is the ebooks themselves - they cost the same as real books but can't be resold, so there's not much point in not getting the real ones. Although if they're thick books it'd be lighter!Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -

Thanks for this post. I have been doing this for years on an unofficial basis. It will be nice to receive the karma points....the Lord knows that I am in overdraft situation in the bank of Karma! Thanks again.
My name is terry. I am a compulsive unread and unfinished book reader. I recognise my faults and know that I can stop with help. Today I was drawn into a charity book and bought two books......One day at a time."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

I haven't read garp but all his books have horrible things happen in them but they also are very funny in parts too and he does often hint about whats going to happen later. I started with "the water method man" which has such funny bits in it that people used to move away from me on the bus coz I was snorting when reading it!
Which reminds me - that also happened when I read Bill Bryson "Notes from a small island" on the bus
I can't see why e books are the same price as normal books, they don't have production and shipping costs - I'm sure the author isn't getting the extra money!Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
i seem to be the only person who didn't enjoy the time travellers wife,I decided to offset the cost of books by putting the bookcases against the outside walls therefore insulating my home and saving energy:p0

I loved that book too Ames, but the film was dire - has anyone seen it?
Re e readers, my problem with them would be not getting the feel and smell of a new book - I love opening a new book for the first time. Am I weird or does anyone else have that feeling?i seem to be the only person who didn't enjoy the time travellers wife,I decided to offset the cost of books by putting the bookcases against the outside walls therefore insulating my home and saving energy:p
You're not, feedumall, I hated that book, couldn't get into it at all. I borrowed it from a friend who hadn't managed to finish it either, so there are three of us now! Well done on saving energy by moving the bookcase - brilliant idea! The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time

just found this thread, only trouble reading the thread is that it takes away from reading time. just ordered the Kelly Gang, as visited Glenrowan, site of Kelly's siege, last month in Australia.
aiming to donate/sell one book out for every book in. I am however a great library fan, as don't often re-read novels.
Still occasionally re-read my Famous Five!Carolbee0
