Thanks everyone for their kind comments and suggestions - it's quite the inspiration!
I forgot to add earlier one reason I can't make a big 'mum's on a diet' hullabaloo is because I have a teenaged daughter that a few years ago battled anorexia. She's fine now though it was very scarey for awhile and it was a long fight back for all of us. It's quite easy for her to relapse and it can become a downward spiral from there so I have to be very careful that I don't obsess too much over food. I have sometimes guiltily wondered if my fanatical following of the no fat brigade it what brought it all on for her.
My excess weight has crept of from a combination of going through a period of depression and eating when stressed, giving up exercise due to a back injury and getting too busy to take care of myself i.e. skipping meals because I'm pushed for time then being famished and eating convinience food later. I also tend to being hypoglycemic.
Like others here have said I feel it should be possible to lose the weight without a big palava. I've sort of decided even if takes a year or doesn't even happen at all at least I will know I've done what I could.
So onwards with the healthy eating and I will continue the 40 mins a day walking and jogging. I like what Cat said about not eating cabs after 2 or 3, will give that a try.No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!0 -
hello all!
grateful - well done!:T
I've had a really good week so far:j and have eaten masses of fruit and salad and not one biscuit:T I did have a slither of cake yesterday at a buffet at work but that was all - I ate my healthy sandwich before I went so I wouldn't be tempted.:A:D
weigh in tomorrow for me and am hopeful to have lost this week.
b - 1 ww toast and marmalade. 1 weetabix with banana, seeds and rasisins - skimmed milk.
S - melon and pear
L - jacket spud, tuna(bit of mayo and some sweet chilli sauce) and salad
S - apple
D - egg and rustic chips - with possibly some beans too.
S - yoghurt.
good luck all xDo what you love :happyhear0 -
It sounds like you are doing really well at taking care of yourself already, and setting a fantastic example for your daughter. So here's a radical suggestion that entirely cuts out the hullabaloo: don't bother! Take care of your health (mental and physical) and let your weight take care of itself.
I tried this and it "works" perfectly in that I couldn't tell you what I weigh to within a stone, but I'm happier by miles and have more mental energy because I'm not expending all that effort keeping a running tally of what I've eaten or guilting about slices of other people's birthday cake or estimating the fat content of every dish on every takeaway menu (BORING). And I exercise more and get more fun out of it now it isn't a penance - I ran a half marathon last year, albeit slowly, and am signing up for another this autumn.
Whether or not you approve of the above suggestion, if you're enjoying the Couch to 5k I thoroughly recommend signing up for something friendly like a Race for Life event as soon as you feel confident enough to set that kind of goal - it's really helpful in the getting-your-bum-off-the-sofa stakes and gives you a huge sense of achievement.0 -
Shandyclover you might found the NoS diet useful, don't worry it isn't a gimmick just common sense. I'm sure it would would work for me if only I weren't so greedy.
It is simply
No Snacks
No Seconds
No Sweets
Except on S days which are Saturdays, Sundays and Special days (birthdays, Christmas etc)
They advocate smaller plates too -9 inches. The site has a useful forum.
I'm in a similar situation to you -5 stone to lose, lost a lot of weight before I met my husband by eating low-fat and counting calories and being a lot more active. I too don't want to eat differently from my family none of whom have a weight problem. My very slim daughter is 10 but already becoming body-conscious so I don't want her to start worrying about her weight. I have recently been considering a low fat diet again but really want to just get into the habit of eating less. I too cook from scratch. I'm sure it must be possible, I think will power is the chief requirement.
Thank you for posting your question because it has brought into focus what I should do to lose weight and improve my health:):T0 -
Hi everyone. Failed in my aim to have a low fat breakfast, but have done well the rest of the day.
Keep it up! eta thanks tappy. Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0 -
Thanks Tish P and thriftlady for your responses - seems like I'm not the only one who believes it must be possible!
I have 4 teen daughters and hubby all with metabolisms like raging infernos! At time it seems unfair but I think alot of my problems stem from extreme dieting in my teens so I probably messed up my metabolism a bit (I was a size 8-10 so I've no idea why I was dieting!) and my tendency to eat when I get stressed, depressed or bored. Since life in the last few years has been one letdown after another and I can no longer afford to do alot of things I used to, the pounds piled on. I have started diets several times but I believe failed because of the whole 'diet' trap rather than embracing a new way of life. Now I'm trying to focus on eating healthily and exercising everyday - and trusting nature to take its course. I like the idea of the no S thingy - though it may be a 'diet' it gives you a way of enjoying a few of lifes luxuries. I know hubby finds it tiresome when I will not enjoy a piece of chocolate with him - seems like many have found though deprivation just makes you rebel in the end and do even more damage. No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014.
