I'm just curious if anyone has been able to lose weight without any gimmicks or diets you have to buy into i.e. by just eating what the rest of the family eats, just eating less?
I've about a stone to lose. About 5 years ago I lost alot of weight by going the 'low-fat' route. I ate completely differently to my family though.
This time round I want to see if I can do it without having to splash out the money, which in all honesty I would rather spend on rare treats for my children rather than diet food for me.
We have a pretty healthy diet, cook all meals from scratch and eat a fair bit of beans and lentils, veg and fruit etc. Biscuits, crisps etc. are treats rather than regular snacks.I've already cut out sugar from my tea and butter off my toast. I also started the podcast programme couch to 5km jogging. Anyways just curious to see if anyone else has managed to make it work this way?No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!0 -

Hi shandyclover,
Quite a few Old Stylers have managed to lose weight without diets or gimmicks. There's an existing thread where you can read how they've got on and get encouragement from others trying to lose weight in the same way so I'll add your thread to it so that you can have a browse.

Yes. I do think it helps if you keep a food diary, and write down everything you eat(including 'healthy' things;) in two columns:
essential food
luxury food
And, cut down on the luxury food if you are not losing weight.
I also think increasing your exercise is good, and eating food slowly is also good.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

hi shandyclover. I managed to lose 3 stone without dieting nearly ten years ago and have had no trouble at all keeping to my optimum weight.
I had gone up from 7stone (underweight) to just over 11 stone after giving up smoking and quite honestly didnt worry about it too much until my OH started calling me porky! so i tried the rosemary conley diet - and put on another half a stone in a month.
then i started a full time college course and landed an evening job about 15 miles away, which meant i had to rush home from college take dog out and rush out to catch bus for work. In my house the main meal was supper and so i missed that. because i wouldnt get in till about 10.30 so creamcrackered i just fell into bed.
so i made sure i had a weetabix or something in morning, a light snack at breaktime (muesli bar or similar) and ate lunch in the college cafeteria and believe me i stoked up - even used to have dessert sometimes and i havent got a sweet tooth.
I would get into town in time to run into boots or marks and pick up a sarnie or a box salad and would eat that after work on the bus home.
and the weight just fell off me. I wasnt just the rushing around as my college course finished before my evening job ended and the weight still came off as i just carried on having brekky and a midmorning snack then a substantial lunch and a light supper.
i lost the whole 3 stones in less than a year and i still have my main meal at lunchtime on a normal plate but if i eat in the evening i use a small tea plate. (depending how much i ate during the day, i am not always hungry at suppertime, and if i'm not hungry i dont eat).
no special diet no gimmicks no buying diet meals - just plain honest cooking.
Joan Collins apparently uses this version and this is the way she puts it - breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper!
What can i say - it works!
PS - when the weight came off I stuck at 8 stone and have been the same ever since - if my waistband gets tight i just make sure i dont indulge too much in the evening - its easier if you use a small plate to control portion size.0 -

If you are serious here's a few things to start you off with......I'll write more if you like the idea
won't cost you anything and the family will eat it all as well.
All you'll need to do is change your eating habits no odd diet or going hungry
The easy way of losing weight is changing your eating habits and replacing the bad with good it really is that simple. (calories do count)
I'm a soldier so not some odd bloke that lives off grapes and cardboard.
ALWAYS eat breakfast get rid of cereals (useless food)
PROTEIN keeps you full and you won't get fat eating it.....and its mostly easy to cook and tasty
CARBS give you energy but can make you fat, so its important to balance the two.
Protein = eggs/chicken/pork/lean red meat/fish/dairy/nuts and seeds
Carbs = potatoes/white rice/bread/fruit/etc anything that you probably love lol
DOn't eat anything processed
so a day would look like this
breakfast = 2 boiled eggs 2 slices of brown bread and some fruit juice
snack = nuts/fruit/fresh veg
lunch = baked potatoe/salad/sandwich with protein in it.
snack = nuts/fruit/fresh veg
dinner = fish/pork/chicken with LOADS of veg
unless you are burning over your normally calories requirements (2000 for women 2500 for men) you DO NOT need carbs from 2/3 pm onwards as its just energy you won't burn (ie you run alot etc)
the weight will drop off getting rid of most of the carbs you eat
Also to get rid of it faster WALK MORE do things like run up the stairs etc and again i promise you the weight will come off before you know it (and you'll feel great.
ITS NOT A DIET its just eating correctlyIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -

Genuisscuffy Well done you! (Fellow arthriitc) just a thought have you ever read the F plan? Lots of jacket spuds & things to fill you up.
gratefulforhelp One day at a time, you'll get there.
UnluckyT Hope you are feeling a bit better? I've started buying some slimming mags & some of the recipes are pretty good. I like the stories too, it helps to read about other people have lost the weight. So much has changed since I last attempted this.
