what do you like to eat for your evening meal?
You can often lower the fat or the portion size of things you already eat, this makes it easier to stick to than changing what you eat or eat in a way that's un-natural for you.
A new regime is exciting - well done you...0 -
we have just got our steamer out (electric) and its fab, just put the food in, set the timer and off it goes, we too are trying to be more healthy so it's fish, chicken and veg for us (and millionaire's shortbread which is in the fridge setting!)0

Yes, and sometimes just having smaller portions of the calorie dense part of the meal works, and topping up with extra veg, for example if you would normally have, say, pork chops with mash, peas and gravy, next time try to pick smaller chops in the shop or cut a big one in half, then serve with a smaller portion of mash, (or a microwave baked potato and low fat cream cheese), plus two or three veg servings to fill you up.
Another suggestion I keep meaning to implement myself is to make up a batch of HM veggie soup, and serve a small portion of this before each meal (like half a mug of soup) as a starter, then dish up smaller portions of your main meal. The soup would take a while to make, but you can make up a huge batch and freeze it in small portions.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -
rachbc is right. Planning is the key.
I'm currently on a 1400 calorie (ish) diet, try to eat my main meal at lunchtime where possible and a decent breakfast (particularly as I exercise in the mornings).
My good days look something like this:
Get up - have a glass of water and glass of juice
go to gym - have a banana on the way home
Breakfast - either yogurt/muesli/fruit; porridge & fruit or egg on toast; plus half a grapefruit
Snacks - raw carrots, clementines, chopped apple, brazil nuts or dried fruit (weighed and accounted for....)
Main meal - always at least 100g each of three vegetables with either fishcake, smoked mackeral (hot) & couscous, salmon & noodles, chicken & rice or similar. I also use mini quiches heated up. If I'm at work I sometimes have one of the Innocent veg pots
Light meal - soup, salad, toast/rice cakes with houmous/cottage cheese/baba ganoush
Remember you need about 50% of the calories from carbs, 35% from fat and 15% from protein, but it's not as simple as thinking 'bread is carbohydrate' as it has fat & protein in too. So you need to think quite carefully about how you get a balance.0 -
Hi
Next week i am starting a new healthy eating regime, i have plenty of idea's for my breakfast / lunch but i am looking for some idea's for my evening meal.
I currently don't have a slow cooker, any suggestions that aren't going to take hours to cook?
Thanks
Vegetables, fruit and salad need little or no cooking, and certainly don't need a SC
Take a look at the Weightloss thread for loads of recipes and support :T I'll merge this thread later.

This is so true. I have gradually brought down the portions of carbs (pasta, rice, couscous, potatoes) by consistently weighing them, and I use an olive oil spray and a non-stick pan mostly. For cream I substitute half-fat creme fraiche, and I avoid white sauce mostly, but occasionally make it in a small quantity (for fish pie or smth) with a minimal knob of butter and semi-skimmed milk. Mashed potato is made with fat-free fromage frais.
More fish and chicken, less things like bacon and sausages. Lots of veg, simply steamed, and salads. And pudding only once a week. All this has become a habit now, and it works like a dream. It is mostly for DH's benefit, he has a tendency to put on weight - so I can pig out if I feel like it. But I find I can't handle large portions or fatty foods anymore, it is too much - so much the better!
Good luck and really, you can do it!"Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -
did u know u can make a white sauce with skimmed milk and corn flour to thicken, work s an absolute treat and is soooo low in fat!
put garlic or something in it to give it a bit of flavour or use in lasagne, fish pie, what ever.

How would you do that hot chick? Is there no butter or fat?Would be interested to knowA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

You heat the skimmed milk to just boiling, then mix some corn flour and water to make a runny mix, then add the paste a little at a time whisk into the hot milk til it's the thickness you want.
One virtually fat free White sauce!
I always use long life skimmed, it's a lot less watery than non long life, or use semi-skimmed that'll work just fine too :-)
You could use arrow root powder in the same way ...

hi all,
haven't posted for a while as have been slave driven by my boss, I'm tired, burnt out and have just stopped being stressed as tomorrow is the weekend :T.
I ate well Mon & Tue as I didn't have time to eat during the day and was asleep on the sofa before evening munchies could set inhave been undisciplined from Wed on.
But today I feel great, I'm at the end of the tunnel so can see light and have decided that it was one of those things and to move on. From Monday I'm going to very dedicated to studying for my exams in June and will have to be organised food wise to cope with the time commitments.
Also the weather has finally changed to I'm now happy to eat salad (can't do it in the winter) so 'quick' meals will be health(ier).
Floyd - keep going and be postive, you haven't gained weight and so you will lose it soon.
Hi to Kay & Juile.
Hope the tapdancing had desired effect Taplady
Hugs to all those who need it and sorry to those I've missed out (just read 2 pages in one hit so I know I've missed a few out)
ITS THE WEEKEND :j0
