Hello peeps
Apologies in advance, bit of rambling coming up, just like to get it down on 'paper', gets it out of my system.
background info - have struggled valiantly with the 'black dog' on and off over the years. last bout resulted in being on medication for 2 years - I gained approx 2.5 stones during that time, was already 2 st overweight....not good.
weaned off medication between April and Oct last year. last medication taken 7th October 2010. Have managed to lose 7lbs since then with erratic healthy eating.
ANYHOO, have been a bit concerned the last few months. Been getting a lot of the inidicators suggesting Diabetes - particularly the being old and overweight bit! so I finally went to the local chemist for a DB test and was slightly over the lower cause-for-concern range and had to be referred to the doc.
went to doc last Friday. Had a lovely chat. looks like I might possibly have Imapired Glucose Tolerance, which is some sort of pre-diabetes BUT - and it's a big BUT (no comment:rotfl:), NOW is the time to sort out my lifestyle!!!! It could help prevent advancement into DB territory.
Turns out the IGT might account for my feeling tired all the time. Or I might just be a lazy so and so.
Had blood test at hospital today, results in 3 days, so back to doctor to see if further tests needed.
Official line anyway - irrespective of test results - ELTEE must lose 4 stones and must cut down on the crisps & chocolate at the weekend AND do 1hr walking per day.
blah blah blah, I'm back in the room. Thanks for listening.

I have been looking for a friendly weight loss board to join since I stopped doing slimming world a couple of weeks ago where I lost 3st 7 lb. I enjoyed the diet mostly but it was costing a fortune and to be honest I like the control that calorie counting gives. I hope to lost another 3 and hald stone ish to get to my personal target and I have given myself till 31st August to do it. I think I am gonna start on 1600 cals per day and have just started catching the train to work again so that means I am doing 45 mins of walking 5 times a week. I look forward to supporting others on the board and being supported in harder times. If this isn't the right board for me ca someone let me know.
Thanks

Hugs to Eeny & Eltee - keep going!
Well done to everyone who is staying motivated over weekends - my toughest (that should be weakest!) time.
Welcome eveie189 - we are a friendly bunch so I think you have got the right board! I upped my walking 18 months back when I got another dog and although the weight didn't fall off I shaped up and felt brilliant - so your 45 mins walking will hopefully help you loss weight and inches.
I did ok at the weekend and have notice that my old dog walking jeans are getting seriously baggy, time for a visit to primarks for a load of cheap jeans (they do get very muddy!) and throw out the old ones (I'm terrible for hanging onto clothes so this will be my hard bit)
TODAY:
B: 2 sausage sandwich - they needed using up
S: haven't been hungry!
L: wrap with ham salad or similar
S: ww choc dessertnot sure as didn't get anything out the freezer - oopss

Just catching up. Can I just thank everyone for posting? It really helps me to read through everyone else's individual struggles and the feeling that we are all in this together. Like someone else mentioned here, I've also lost weight with 'slimming clubs' before, but seriously, I think that it was the back up from the other members and the thought that I had to get weighed every week that kept me on the straight and narrow. Once I started to struggle with the payments and the time spent there when I would rather go for a walk I went into a downward spiral!
So cheers everyone, and as a tribute to you I'm putting on my trainers and heading out for a half hour walk now! Thanks again for being there:TThe beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Its really interesting to read about the why's and how's of people's weight loss challenges. I started diet over 20 years ago to lose baby weight, and then I was 13 stone. After years of yo-yo dieting I am now 20 stone. I think I should never have started! I too struggle with the old black dog, so know what thats about, and I comfort eat, but also eat to celebrate good days! At the moment my son is in a really unhappy place as his gf has left him, and I find it so hard not to turn to the bsicuit tin to ease my day......
Anyway,
Today I had weetabix for bfast
Lunch - new pot salad with quorn chunks
Dinner - chicken rice veggies
Snack - just having cup hot choc as I type, so I guess that my snack for today!

Hi Sams
Same for me. First started 'dieting' in 1988 after childbirth. I weighed 12 st 6. Now I am either 15st or 15st 10, depending on if doctor's scales or mine. Last year, at my heaviest ever, I was 16st 2.5lbs. I too wonder if I'd left well alone and just ate like I used to before childbirth - when I was around 10stone and ate whatever I fancied - I would've had a weight problem.

Afternoon all,
Really good to see so much support going on and I too have been interested in reading peoples stories.
I gained weight when I stopped exercising so much, but as this was part of my daily routine (dog walking & horse riding) I didn't really know how much exercise I did until I'd gain the weight and had to look back at why.
I've managed never to go above a size 14 and I blame jogging bottoms for much of my downfall. Sounds daft typing that, but as I throw away so few clothes I always knew I'd put on weight when I couldn't get my jeans zipped up, its really easy to tackle when its a few lbs, but jogging bottoms (and a blind eye) can turn those lbs into stones - which have been much harder to shift!
My heart goes out to those of you who suffer the black dog, I've never suffered but was once very low due to a relationship and think I can see how hard it must be.
Today:
B: single pack of cereals & splash of milk
S: didn't have any but was I Hank Marvin!!
L: left over cottage pie (last nights dinner) & pasta in a mug
S: areo moussethink its chilli - but we don't have any kidney beans, mushrooms or peppers, guess that makes it mince & rice :rotfl:
Should going to yoga, which although it doesn't burn calories I always feel better afterwards.0 -
Looks like we are all 'serial dieters'. I dieted during the Twiggy years when I was 8 and a half stone, and panicked if I went up to 8.10! The term yo-yo dieting hadn't been heard of then but I really think that it has made an impact. Looking back, my sister and I lived on 'Limmits' (meal replacement biscuits) and Energen crispbread (anyone else remember them?) and no one suggested that it wasn't healthy for us...everyone dieted in the era of miniskirts, my mother always stuggled with her weight so we were determined that we would never be fat!
I am now heavier than I've ever been and can honestly say that I never buy takeaways, don't drink, and always try to eat healthily. OK, we all slip up now and again but when I see these programmes where people eat mountains of fatty food and fizzy pop it makes me feel sick. I can only come to the conclusion that we need to eat as much natural, unprocessed food as we can because there's something in there that is making us all obese. (Along with less exercise of course, which I think I need to address)
When I say that my mother was overweight she was about 12 stone and that was considered quite big in those days, nothing like the big sizes we see now. I often think that she would be horrified if she saw the size of some people these days.
Of course this is just my opinion and I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks. (Steps down off soapbox:o)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.

I agree with mlz on the jogging bottoms. I always had to fit into suits for work and live in jogging bottoms now, they are so comfy for working around the house! But you soon feel the difference when you put a pair of jeans on! Maybe it's time to ditch the joggers....The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
