I'm sure something like golden syrup can be recreated, but maple syrup is a plant derivative (boiled maple bark). Apparently

I'm intrigued that this lovely team we have here seem to have quite different non-negotiables than the wider surveyed population.

    I wonder why that is?
I imagine the people here are likely to be more interested in food/nutrition/cooking and frugal cooking than the general population which may be the difference.

Found that Cranks' recipe for this:

    http://www.cranks.co.uk/recipes/view/6

There's one or two others that may "adapt" on this site too.

This one certainly strikes me as very possible pretty much as is - ie presumably with the butter in the pastry swopped for buttery spread - but no other alterations necessary:)

(Come to think of it - I've often eaten Homity Pie - but never made it yet in all these years....not like I've not had plenty of chance - as this is a 1970s recipe as I recall....). Must get that one on the menu for myself soon...

EDIT: Mea culpa - I just decided to have a little lookie on Amazon and found 42 copies of the original style Cranks Cookbook for 1p. Errr....cough....theres now 41 left...(got one now winging its way to me to add to my "small" collection of cookbooks.....).

might be of interest for the veggie plan, or for anyone, like me, constructing their own plan

    Lesley

Just "clicked to" that comment of yours - is this vegetarian? I'd certainly be interested to see a copy of this anyway if its something you have "on line":)

grandma247 talked a page or so ago about an oaty biscuit which had coped with the ready brek... would you like to try that?

Do you know how to do 'search this thread' and then look for posts by a particular username?

edit or just do a recipe that seems right to you frankie, I know you're an experienced cook

weezl I've used 4oz sr flour, 4oz sugar and 4oz of the 'ready brek'. Then mixed in 8floz of oil. Put onto a baking tray and pressed down. Currently in the oven at gas mark 4. I've no idea how it will turn out. I'm hoping to be able to cut it it into pieces like flapjack but the uncooked mix was very crumbly so I'm not sure....maybe less of the ready brek would help...anyway, I'll let you know.

I can't wait till the first meal planner is ready. I'm going to chat to the family about giving it a serious go. It would save me £100 for the month which has got to be some kind of incentive!

Hello, filled in the tea survey for me and dh. DC's don't drink tea - mostly water now but with juice at tea-time. Occasionally hot choc (usually ds2 in the winter!) or milk (ds2 again!).

We didn't have the Spanish Omlette last night :( Dc's came out of school requesting pasta and since ds2 has been asking for pasta all week.. I thought I better do pasta - sorry... It will be on the menu list though! We had cold onion tart today - and yummy it was too! So thumbs up for that one from us!

PS stick blenders are usually ~£5 in Mr T /Mr S. I have a Mr S basics one I bought just before Xmas If you want me to try making different spreads with it?

I bought a stick blender for £3.96 from Mr T. If you only want to blend cold stuff I suppose it might be OK, but I used mine for soup the first time it was out and erm, the little place under the blade warped and made a hidey hole for old food that couldn't be cleaned out, though I suspected it got whizzed out with the next lot of stuff

Pizza dough really needs a relaxer to be able to roll it out thin. here
is a site that explains it. Scroll towards the bottom. You can buy commercial relaxer but there is a recipe for home made. I need to find the ingredients.

I just make sure that there is enough liquid in to make a pliable dough. I have some commercial relaxer, but didn't get on very well with it. Maybe I should have another go.
