  • Lisburn- Dad this makes sense. I don't see how we can work out percentages when we don't know what average score is! I had a friend who worked out her child's percentage by taking his score out of 145 but this cannot be as 145 does not equal 100% as all we actually know is that whatever the average raw score is equals 100. Am I wrong?

:T Absolutely agree , anything else is pure speculation the fact is that 100 is the average , that is the point of standardised scores , so average or mean could be anything and supposed top mark of 128 is relative to this. So if average (100) is 78% as you suggest then 128 is relative to this and coul;d be anything from 78% to 98%!!!! No-one knows

This is an earlier message which I posted - hope this is of some assistance:

Based on the %s scoring A, B1, etc in the GL Assessment tests, here are the grade boundaries for the AQE tests:

    A - 103
    B1 - 99
    B2 - 95
    C1 - 91
C2 - 85 (this one is only an estimation!)

I would heed these grade boundaries more than the daft ones suggested by AQE!!

Well I'm a bit lost on the averages but was wondering how accurate do people think these grade boundaries posted by Tommy might be?

Josiejo, you are scaring me. :rotfl:

I think I'm going to apply to AQE under the Freedom of Information Act for information on how many kids were in each quintile etc and also for information on how they did age standardisation. Is there anything else you think I should be asking? I may as well put everyone's question in and then I can share it with you all? I would have thought maybe the Belfast Telegraph would have done this but no show so far.

I'm afraid you will probably have no joy under a FOI request as the AQE is not a public body and therefore not answerable to the public.

  • i would just like to jump in here and add a few comments;) only fair as i started this debate over a year ago (what now for next years p7) on another thread. in my case the school did all they could to get the kids through the tests to the best of their abbilities and my big fella made up his mind that he didn't want to do the test and we and his teacher talked it over with him and right up to the last day he was not for changing his mind and had picked his school (always in the top 5 of his class and teacher is still not impressed he didn't do the test but did agree he is a lot happier not having done the tests!!!) and from the end of p6 he had picked his school and after looking at other schools it is still his choice. i have friends who kids did do the test and got good results and are just like the rest of you on here dazed and confused:eek: by the whole thing and having followed this thread from the beginning i have to say that some of the comments made have made me laugh - and a few have made me sad in the fact that if a child does not get into the grammer of their choice and end up at the local secondery school it will be a disaster .... not so if the child wants to do well it makes no difference what school they attend as long as they get the support they need at home as well ..... but i could go on all night but i won't just to add that the secondery collage that my son picked last year they had 13 of the sixth form went on to higher education and 3 of them to stranmillis and the rest into employment and i have a happy child who had enjoyed his last year at primary school and don't be thinking ' it's ok for you, you've the choices made etc etc etc ' i have to do it all again in 4 years time but that another story;)
 while i knit i think

  • Thanks Vido, I never thought of that. :o

Craftyfox, well done to your son in finding a school he is happy with. :) I'm probably one of the ones who made such a comment about a secondary school being a disaster. I base this on my locality - East Belfast. I simply am not happy with any of the secondary schools in this area. If that makes me a bad person then I'll live with it. I appreciate that there are good secondary schools out there - Glengormley High etc but they are no good to us where we live.

Ex-spendaholic, you are not a bad person for wanting the best for your child!! The fact that you have supported your child through the test and are are now on this thread very concerned like the rest of us speaks volumes. I will put my hand up and say there was no way my husband or I wanted our son to go to secondary school. Now if we thought he would struggle at grammar school that would have been a different story. We went to loads of open nights including all the secondary schools in the area and we found there to be a BIG difference between the secondary schools and the grammar schools that we visited. We found the grammar school children to be much more friendly, confident and polite. I am not saying that this is the case for all schools, simply an observation from the schools that we visited.
  • Can I just say thanks for all the posts. its been my only salvation this past week and this has been the only place I am getting any form of info. It has been a nightmare since the results came out - worse than when the kids where doing the tests. Any snippet of info is useful so keep it going!!!!:T
