Our primary principal has advised me that the local heads have acknowledged amongst themselves a significant level of under achievement in our area. Personally I hope they are right.
There does seem to be a big discrepency in marks between schools. JosieJo's childs school on here for example had really high marks!! Can I ask in what area is your primary school?0 -
I think Josiejo said in an earlier post that her child's school were very good with preparation. In my case the school did very little and my child's teacher frequently made remarks along the lines of "these tests are nothing to do with the school", "its your parents who are making you do them", "I hope you aren't missing out on activities because of these tests". Just to put the final nail in the coffin, on the day before test 3 the teacher said that the kids didn't need to worry as only the marks of 2 tests counted. I was not amused with this as we had never mentioned this as we didn't want an instant drop in effort. Try telling a kid that you are right and not the teacher.
This school always turned out loads of A grades in the past and has let the kids down and its own reputation. I'm sure if some stats were produced illustrating levels of primary school support verses grades we would see an interesting picture.0 -
I understand that this seems unfair - however if you were the parent of said second child, can you imagine trying to explain to them that they were not smart enough to get in to the school their sibling is already at?????
We will have to go through all of this again in 4 years and frankly I am already dreading it. If there is any justice in this world, a child with a score of over 100 should be able to get into a good grammar school.
Whilst trying to change scores to old grades may seem helpful, I just think it is wrong. The two tests were completely different as the 11+ had a large element of science in it which was at a lower level than the english & maths - thus bringing up the scores. From what I can gather from speaking to a variety of sources, someone in Q3 or 4 could easily be a B1 or even an A in the old test.0 -

Newtownards. School were reluctantly supportive, but head admitted to me today that he does not support grammar school education. Good to know now!!!0 -

I have to agree about the low scores received this year. It is hard to believe that no child scored over 128 in a test out of 145, I am sure that this years p7's are equally as intelligent as any other year and yet there are no really high marks. I know in our school there were children who rarely got more than 1 or 2 questions wrong in practice papers towards the end and yet they all lost more than 20 marks in the actual papers. it also seems odd that the GL test results are so high in comparison. what is going on?
I recently heard that the head of our local grammar is ringing round schools telling them to encourage children with lower quintile marks to apply to his school. This is a school which turned away 10 A's last year and only ever accepts a few B's. Looks like these new marks are lower than expected for whatever reason and that grammars will have to take lower ranking children, not because they are any less capable than previous years but it just looks as if this new system has thrown up some surprises and the schools are having to adjust to that.0 -
That would be a mark of 88% but remember it's a Standardised Age Score so the raw score percentage could be higher if it was an older child.0

Surely these scores are not low scores, they are simply relative to a high average- this average being 100. so these scores above 100 are v. good and scores in 120's are exceptional. I think we've had difficulty getting around this as the top quintile was from 113 and initially thought you needed this score or above to have an "A" .since then i think we realise that a lower score is an A. e.g is it not possible that the average of 100 could equate to a raw score of say 78%?0

I know 88% seems like a good score but there were lots of children scoring more than that on a regular basis but they all seem to have fallen flat on the day, regardless of age. I just wonder if it was ever possible to get full marks? Also I didn't think marks were deducted from scores of older children. I really feel this year children have been made to feel they haven't done as well as in previous years when in fact they have. I spoke to a friend at the weekend and he had been talking to the AQE boss who said the test this year was set at a high level and this could explain the the gap at the upper end. So I think we should be congratulating our children for doing so well and be optimistic about what level schools will go down to in order to fill their places.:j0

could i ask how you equate score of 128 to 88%? If average is 100 and we don't know what score it is don't see how this can be. maybe i'm missing something but someone please enlighten me.0
