  • Schools have fixed intake numbers so it would be impossible to set a score in advance as this might lead to too many pupils being eligible for admission.
Scores vary from school to school and year to year due the numbers of pupils applying and the range of their scores.
From looking at the transfer criteria most (AQE) grammar schools list the applicants in order of results and this decides their intake. For exapmple if they have 150 applicants and 100 places, they take the top 100, hence a score of 97 might be the cut off in one school, but 94 in another.
Schools also will not know what their cut off will be until all applications have been recieved, in some cases these might be 3rd or 4th preferences which is why the process takes so long.

My daughter got a score of 100 and am not sure where we stand either. I think that it is a very good score and all of her classmates were clustered in and around that same score. Anyone actually know what that average is and what sort of score grammar schools are taking on this year?

Pupils scores are applied to a standardisation criteria based on age. The average of all test results are worked out and this equals 100 as a standardised score. Scores are then applied on a sliding scale up or down as required. It's also worth noting that this is the average of those who took the test, not the whole P7 population.
Unfortunately AQE don't publish raw scores as well, so it is impossible to judge how they they did on the day compared to practice test.
  • Dear all

Just in case you didn't know - there is a new (lively) forum/thread (not sure what to properly call these things) on this website and it is all about the current year for AQE and GL. It's called
