UK suffers so few surges (compared to most of the world) that even the simplest effective solutions should mean no damage.Im guessing your not from the UK and know little about the UK setup?
Master sockets no longer have effective protection. Some, with a protector from wire to wire, will completely ignore the typically destructive type of surge. I am told BT once installed protection in master sockets. But I have never seen same.
UK residents can install effective protection for about £1 per protected appliance from many responsible companies:
