You made a post in one forum about a suspected faulty PSU. How no parts should be swapped over without first putting a multimeter on all the wires. That is correct, you can test for faulty PSUs by measuring the voltages on the wires it's definately a more precise method of diagnosing faults if you want to be sure or have the time to do it but there is no need.

In an industry such as computing there is no need to test it further if you already know what the fault is. I've never once had to use a multimeter to test PSU wires, I either replace it knowing it's already faulty (through experience) or for PSUs I suspect are faulty I use a PSU Tester (which measures all the wires at once)

He really is quite hilarious at times, like the exploding house because of an open neutral. Faulty wiring can cause faults, electrocution, or fire. It wont 'explode' a house (unless their is a gas leak and a spark sets it off, but no mention of that was made) or a direct hit from a lightning strike etc etc.

It's why I stopped posting, because it just feeds trolls like Westom who have nothing to do but make posts screaming look at meeeeeee!

Until Westom actually posts proven evidence about the industry which they seem to have a habit of avoiding awkward requests like this. I will take no notice in advice given because it can just be another random idiot spouting off I know everything words.

I know this post will feed Westom, so I'm looking forward to the smart remarked reply giving some form of comparison between a fish and a bucket. Or how my knowledge is rubbish and I only continue to flame them whereas they know everything...that kind of thing :)

OMG! I just looked at that link.

Is there a picture anywhere in case I see him in the pub and don't want to hear about surge protectors?

Well, I have seen those results. An electric company friend took the report. Fortunately no one was home when the home exploded due to defective earthing. But that explosion is not relevant here, is it. Neither are your personal attacks.

Where are technical numbers and science facts? You don't have any. So you do what is common among those who forgot to first learn technology - attack the messenger.

You were asked a simple question. Every UPS or protector device is required by UL to provide this number. How many joules does that UPS contain? How much energy will it absorb to fail? Based upon the few numbers you posted, estimated is only 550 joules. With basic electrical knowledge, you could have calculated same. But you were asked to be honest. How many joules does that UPS manufacturer claim in writing? Those numbers must exist if it has a UL listing. How many joules?

You were asked to provide that relevant number. Why do you post personal insults? Why do you avoid providing that joules number? Because it does not claim protection promoted by popular myths and your wild speculation.

Readers should appreciate why the naive recommend a UPS for surge protection. When challenged to provide numbers, instead, the technically naive will post insults.

Effective protection means hundreds of thousands of joules are dissipated harmlessly in earth. That UPS does not claim effective protection and will not even discuss what provides protection - earthing. That UPS does have plenty of aggressive, emotional, and angry posters who just "know". Facts be damned. Reality be damned. At least three here are posting insults to avoid admitting to overt technical naivety.

Every telco switching center, that will suffer maybe 100 surges with each thunderstorm, do not waste money on these ineffective protectors. How often is your entire town without phone service for four days? Telcos locate each protector where it is so effective. As short as possible (ie 'less than 10 feet') to earth ground. To make protection better, telcos locate protectors up to 50 meters separated from electronics. That separation increases protection.

Where is cit_k's protector located? Within feet of the appliance AND many times too far from single point ground. cit_k is even challenged to post each manufacturer spec number that defines protection from each type of surge. He cannot - for all three reasons in this paragraph. Instead he will post more personal attacks. He *knows* without first learning reality. He *knows* only because he was educated by a sales brochure. He knows only because he can post personal insults.

That UPS has no short connection to earth (and other compromises). Even the manufacturer will not claim protection from typically destructive surges. To deny that reality, cit_k, et al posted personal attacks. The most technically naive will do that.

Reality: those who want effective protection earth one 'whole house' protector - as all high reliability facilities have done for over 100 years. Effective protection that costs about $1 per protected appliance. That remains functional even after a direct lightning strike. Reality: a protector is only as effective as its earth ground.

How many joules in that UPS? He still refuses to provide published technical numbers – as required by UL. No numbers because even the manufacturer does not make that claim in tech specs. A protector is only as effective as its earth ground. Reality that exists no matter how many personal insults are posted.

westom you ask us to provide numbers we have offered manfuacturers specs which you have completely ignored like and ignorant preaching preist!

as it would appear also you are on many many forums having an well frankly seem what obsessed person with this subject with very little back ground knowledge all you claims like in the post before 'relate to a friend' and i quote "An electric company friend took the report"

my question to you and on this i would like a clear answer on this what preciously are your electrical qualifications and electrical certifications at all if any?

you talk alot about 'science facts' i ask you what preciously are your scientific facts with evidence (you may proved links) to back up your claims!

so far you have proved nothing other than you can just argue back by telling everyone 'where our facts?' when some have been provided and ignored on many occasions by quite a few different people which shows you just intend to see if you can keep shouting the same stuff and people will go away (without any evidence yet again)

I have to be honest here you say about personal attacks have you heard yourself lately? its not a nice projection of yourself that you are putting out it is aggressive, dominering and arguementive also without reasoning and really without conjector or any form of disscussion in any shape or form and i would say i think the majority feel that here as well. If somebody said that to me i would feel ashamed of how i was behaving and consider is there something wrong with me possiably.

now i have worked professionally in the electronics manufacturing for 10yrs as an electronics rework technian under scopes etc and the last 5yrs as an 3phase electrical tester my test bay runs units upto 100amps with all associated mircoprocessor controllers and seperate computer controllers, i do this for a global airconditioning company and we supply to the likes of power generation cooling units for goverments around the world. now the science does stand up that is everyone apart from you.

maybe it effects you personal income by people buying these products and there for you feel cheated if it is having this much effect on your life i would suggest you have a career change otherwise at the rate you are going you are going to have a stroke or heart attack.

now this is a forum i suggest you treat it as such and have a calm discussion and the emphsis is on disscusion or no one will deal with you here at all.

    Here is fact;
My PSUs burned out despite surge protection....add one USP.....PSUs don't burn out.
  • Enough already Westom, you're making me suicidal, because of your posts : -

I've gone and slit my throat
so I thought it best I wrote
    it's not very good
    cos it's written in blood
and the words keep drip'pin off the note

I decided to write on spec
cos me life's a total wreck
    and the blood's congealing

Westom, It's getting noticed that your posts are verging on obsession and the intensity is too much for us. You clearly have much knowledge but are you Aspbergers?
I'm not being insulting, this is not a jibe but if you could please let us know if that is where you are coming from? If so you will gain understanding from others instead of people (like me too), who are enjoying them as fun or others who are willing to meet and match your arguments. That could relieve much of the stress that is indicated in your very intense and rude replies, which may not be intended?
We are not unpleasant people, but your posts, as they are, I feel will not get the reaction that you want and I anyway would not wish to add to stress.
