  • Bank name: Natwest
Amount Reclaimed: £5500+ (cant remember exact amount)
    Amount they paid: £2000
The story: Dec 2012 - After doing much research (mostly on here!) I used the template letter and added LOTS of details about my financial hardship over the last 5 years including eviction notice, bailiff and court charges for bills that had been unpaid by dd and the bank charges these all accumulated. I also included a complete record of the charges I;d received over my 2 current accounts, and I was receiving charges on average of well over £50 per month ( some months would be over £100) I received an acknowlegement letter a few days later and then nothing until the 3rd week of January when I received a generic response citing the Court Case. I did a lil bit more research and saw on here that someone had sent a letter to the CEO - so I tracked down his email address (by google!) and sent a further letter saying I was incensed that the bank clearly taking me and my situation seriously, and I would give them a further opportunity to take a good look at my case. i received an ackownedgement the next day & then some comms between myself and a lady at the Executives office which resulted in her agreeing that due to the dire situation I was in, (cycle of bank charges & payday loans) she would restore my accounts to zero (£1500 & £500 overdrafts) giving me the breathing space I so desperately needed! It's less than half of what I asked for but I cannot tell you what a relief it is and I'm so very grateful to Martin, the Mods and all of the other users who have posted here - If you are facing genuine hardship I would encourage you to make the claim, and stick to your guns! Best of Luck!
    Peace :-)
  • I recently tried to reclaim some bank charges on the grounds I have some financial difficulties . which I originally tried claiming in 2007 but was put on hold by the courts.

I received a phone call from my bank followed by a letter saying that I couldn't claim on the grounds the courts ruled in favour of the banks in 2009 they went on to say the were sorry to hear of my difficulties how ever there charges were fair contrary but to assist me they have waved my overdraft fees and charges for the next 3 months.
they also went on to say as I expressed that I had financial difficulties and struggling to pay essential bills they looked in to my account and could see regular unessential spending (mobile phone) and ATM withdrawals and if I was unhappy with the out come I can provide more information or write to the ombudsman

has any one else had a similar reply or advise me on what to do next

Sounds as if they are prepared to assist you to some degree with your difficulties. At least they haven't fobbed you off.

As you are claiming hardship I would do as they ask and provide more information regarding this ie: Proof - copies of unpaid bills, debts etc and detail your actual expenditure and income. If you can justify the cost of your mobile phone all well and good, perhaps you have a sick relative and may need to be contacted urgently or you are trying to get a job and don't want to miss any opportunities; you get the sort of thing.

The more proof you have that you are genuinely in difficulties the better. They may reconsider. Good luck.

    Great news
  • Lloyds TSB
    Amount claimed: £2250
    Amount received £550.

The bank has not offered my any of the £1965 of overdraft charges as I claimed for, because again they point to T & C's and the Supreme court decision.
However, they have offered me £160 in charges incurred from July 2012 - present to assist with finances.

Regarding mis-selling my packaged account, they did not dispute this at all. They have refunded all £227 of my current account fees and £77 interest. Basically, while I was a student, the bank sold me a current account and did not explain a student account was far more appropriate for my needs. with a student account, you receive no interest on overdrafts and no account fee. I faced absolutely no dispute as to whether I was mis-sold this; they simply accepted it.

Additionally, I received a goodwill gesture of £75.

The claim took two weeks exactly to settle and the money was in my bank instantly.

I will write to them accepting this offer. However, they were very evasive of my credit card situation. Basically, they sold me a £4000 credit card with this current account, disguised as a 'benefit'. Since they have mis-sold the current account, it follows that I have been mis-sold the credit card too. I would not therefore have incurred credit on this if I had been offered the correct product. This is my next line of attack.

The bank have sent me copies of my credit card charges free of charge. i will read through this and post any success I obtain with the charges in due course, also on whether I have any success claiming anything on the value of my card.

    Great success!!!
  • Hi All

I wrote to my local Santander branch on 11th January 2013 using one of the templates. Last year they charged me £552.00 worth of fees and at the time of writing they were due to charge another £124.00 by end of January. I sent them a comprehensive letter outlining my situation (illness leading to time off, finding a new job with reduced hours etc) I told them to write back within 14 days.

After 14 days I hadn't heard and went online and sent a message through their 'secure message service'. Within three days I had a refund of £124.00 for January, and they had cancelled the £20.00 that I had since had a bill for due for Feb.

Not happy with this, I emailed again thanking them for their speedy reply and the reimbursement but asked why they did not feel I was entitled to the full amount from 2012. I gave them seven days to reply (written 13th Feb) I then got a phone call yesterday (18th Feb) from a lady asking more about my circumstances and suprise surprise the branch hadn't done anything about the letter. She said she would look into it as a matter of urgency and get back to me today.

This morning I looked at my account and received a call. She had refunded me £408.00, and had also put £60.00 in as an agreement from the branch and their complaints for not dealing with it quickly enough. That makes a grand total of £592.00 from the £676.00 which I am ecstatic about. Sure, I could chase for the rest but due to the speed of it all and the contents, I am happy with that amount. I have since written a letter to thank the lady for her near perfect service.

I've read recently that Santander's service has gone up and this just proves it in some cases. Still extremely peeved with the branch as I am yet to even have acknowledgement, and from the sounds of it from the lady investigating my case, they were ' truely sorry they had missed it' which sounds like they did recieve it.

It hasn't by any means solved all my problems but it has helped a good amount and it is money I thought had gone forever. Thank you MSE for your templates and easy to use guides :) All in all it took me only just over a month from start to finish, which looking at many other stories is a really good result.

Barclays: £100 for alleged mis-selling of Graduate Additions Bank Account.

Whilst Barclays didn't uphold the complaint, due to the time that has elapsed, they did accept my complaint in principle and refunded 12 months of fees as goodwill.

I thought the Barclays Additions Bank Account was only £7 per month?
    (£84 per year)

So if you got £100 back, they gave you some more goodwill too. :T

    Presumably you followed this article

rather than the one linked to in the OP
Therefore, your post should really have been in that success & failures thread rather than this one

Wrote a letter to Lloyds for my daughter who was charged £86 for a few times overdrawn. She delivered the letter to the bank who read it there and then. They immediately cancelled any future charges and now 1 week later refunded her the £86! She is delighted! They refunded the charges even though she is leaving them for the Halifax. It pays to write the letters folks!!!!

I have successfully received two cheques for miss sold PPI one from Lloyds for £3942.60 and one from MBNA for £989.16, I used the template letters and advice given on this site. I sent first letters in December 2012 and have this week received and banked both cheques.

These accounts were not mine, I was acting for my cousin, both accounts were in default and both had been sold on. The Lloyds payment is particularly satisfying as I had tried to claim on this policy 4 years ago when my cousin had a heart attack and bypass surgery and they denied claim!!:T:T:T
