  • Hi All,
I recieved my bank charge back from Nationwide within 1 day, which is incredibly lucky.
For 30Plus years i never had any unautorised odrwan account with the Nationwide, then for the last to month, my account has been inactivive as i was aboroad, before i left i ensured it was in credit and all my dd and standing orders were cancelled or so i thought, i left a 1.24 standing order open which was unpaid and returned due to insufficant funds, Nationwide then within 2months mamaged to spiral me into unauthorised overdaft and 290 pound of debt, wihtout any activity from me, i wrote them a letter of complaint requesting they repay the charge (i.e. 290 pound) and return my account to its original balance, within1 day thet did and also gave me 50pound compenstation, so a result.
i would tell you all to fight for the charges back, they do give in especially if you state exactly what you want, be clear and concise, and very nice

How much credit did you leave in the account if a forgotten about standing order for £1.24 was not paid due to insufficient funds?

    Amount Received - £450 (!) :T

Hi, another success story to prove that bank charge reclaiming is definitely not a thing of the past! I sent the letter on Friday on behalf of OH asking for 3 months worth of charges back while he was on a debt management plan. They rang up Tuesday morning saying that having looked into it properly they actually owed him £450 - receiving a cheque next week.

These bank charges are 3 years old, from an account that has long been closed, and we claimed on the grounds of financial hardship at the time.
    LBM 05/11/2012 - Total Debt £6735
    DFW Deadline: September 1st 2013 - Target Christmas 2012: £5000

  • Bank - HBOS
    Amount - £960
    Date - November 2012

    The story:
Received letter Aug 12 that owed debt company £660 for a HBOS bank account debt. This referred to an account closed in 2007 after I spiralled into debt. Having started to sort myself out in 2009 via the CAB I was in a debt management scheme. During 2009/2010 CAB and myself had tried to contact HBOS about this account to include it in the debt management scheme but no response and in branch couldn't find it either and was told probably written off. So letter this year about it was a surprise. Phoned them and asked for copies of statements which they provided. These showed £1960 bank charges. Including some £400 over the last 12 days before the account was closed in 2007. Used the template letter from the websie and explained my story about spiralling charges contributing to me being £10000 in debt which was true.
Received a call from HBOS that the complaint wasn't being upheld, I explained to the lady that I didn't accept this as I was being currently chased for money in relation to these bank charges. She said for me to phone back the next day which I did. Completely different conversation. Said I was getting back the £960 of charges which they said had been added after the account had been closed - so still didn't admit they had been competely unreasonable with their charges, but I dont care. They also said they would send £660 straight to debt collection company, and the left over to me. Happy with this result. Just wanted them to at least cover the outstanding debt.
  • As expected, my PPI claim against Capital One went to the Ombudsman and was turned down.

  • I have today made a call to Barclays bank, as I am a student midwife with a monthly income (NHS bursary) of £290.00, my finances have been getting worse every month, my income could cover my bills, but not my charges as well, at the moment I am only managing to afford food and bank charges (not bills), I am not managing this very well. I called and spoke to a telephone banking manager who very strongly informed me that when the arguement went to court over charges, it went in the banks favour and therefor not a penny will be paid back to me. I was very upset on the phone, but she informed me to organise my debt better and wished me a mery christmas .
So I have adapted the template and added in bank statements with highlighted charges for the last 12 months, from January £1104.00 - my finances were fine before becoming a student. I think I hit almost everyone of the 'financial hardship' criterea. I am just really worried following the response on the phone that this will make no difference. I can't figure out from the relevant pages, probably because I am in such a tizz, what other evidence it would be worth me sending in to the bank. Also, do I send it into my local branch and do I direct it to a specific department ?

Many thanks for any help given

    Send it to here:

    Customer Relations
    Barclays Bank Plc
    Leicester
    LE87 2BB

Just state your circumstances as they are, you have nothing to lose.
Keep it to the point and put all relevent detail down. Say how difficult you are finding paying for living costs etc.

Hopefully, it will be someone who possesses a little more tact and diplomacy as well as an ability to consider your circumstances properly and fairly who reads your letter.

Copies of anything in writing relating to non payment of bills/demands etc is ideal to evidence your situation..

    Good luck

The only thing to be aware of is that the FOS do not have the power to get the bank to refund. They can only encourage the bank to look at your case fairly. Most banks are pretty good on current hardship cases to be fair. Do you meet the current hardship criteria (i.e. are you in hardship now) or is this historical hardship but you are no longer in hardship?
