The way my american friend explained to me that if you get food and take it away yourself then you don't tip. If someone brings your food to you then you tip.

Also tip the taxi drivers/bellhop ( if the hotel has one) etc etc.

Dont forget the maid $ 3 or $4 dollars a day and the bar person that serves you! :D
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!

I'm all for walking, but needed to know where to start! i am slightly limited on walking, with a dodgy knee and back, but will up the painkillers and alcohol!

    Hi Jodie,
Last time I went the missus had a really bad back and couldn't walk too far without stopping, and going up and down the stairs for the subway was a pain too. We had travel passses and started using the buses, it was excellent! You get to see a lot more riding the bus and you can get off if you see something interesting.

    Good luck!

I'd second this! I can't quite remember how we ended up on the public bus service, but it was an interesting ride back to the hotel. We saw more than just the touristy bits, including a crash at an intersection and the people involved jump out and start shouting at each other!
We told the driver where we wanted to be and he told us where we needed to get off the bus and which way to head. He was really helpful, even though he did get his newspaper out and read it every time we stopped at the lights!
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

I agree about the buses, we use the buses mostly and the subway randomly. I like the fact if you have a 7 day pass you can just jump on and off again as you like whenever you see something you want to look at.

Been reading through the pages with interest but despite this have a few questions for those of you with experience of New York!

We have a 4 night break booked for September flying with Delta and staying at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers, read some reviews but wondered if anyone had any direct experience..... would love to hear your opinion please!

Also following on from the food/drink budget question - would £500.00 for all meals for a family of 4 be a reasonable budget breakfast, picnic lunches and evening meal (not haute cuisine) - I know peoples budgets vary greatly but was just thinking if this is way out..?

stopped at sheraton towers in 2007 excellent location in my opinion and a decent hotel,i had a cracink view of central park from window many floors up.10 minutes walk you are in times square or broadway 10 mins other way you are at central park.
in my opinion £500 is very tight, last time i went it was just 2 of us for 6 days nothing special went to diner for breakfast picked up a saandwich for lunch and a decent but not mega expensive evening meal, along with drinks from memory we spent around £800 and it was almost $2 to pound then.
this year going for 6 nights 2 adults and a child have already got all tickets for attractions but will be taking around £1000 plus cards for back up.
but like you say everyones budget is different.

Thanks for that - won't be drinking loads with 2 kids in tow but the occasional beer/coffee/soft drink etc for us all would be nice.

It's just the kind of info needed as I have no idea of prices etc and am still researching the trip. We can afford to up the budget as daughter won a comp for the holiday and the £500.00 was given to us as part of the prize for food budget:-)

Need to work out what other attractions we want to see and a rough budget for these. Obviously with 2 kids in tow it might be less fast paced than if it were just us but want to see as much as possible as it is such a fab opportunity to experience NYC

    Hi

I am just planning a 4 night break to New York (april 2011) and have a few questions.....

    1. Is four nights suitable or would 3 nights suffice? We have 2 teenagers in tow (13 and 14)
    2. Really want to fly Virgin - but is the service any better than Delta or Continental Airlines?
    3. Anyone stayed at Westin New York Times Square? This is my favourite choice so far.....
    4. Regarding airport transfers....shall we pre-book or get one when arriving? Also, may book a limo for arrival (special occasion) so who would be the best company to book this with?
    5. I am looking to book direct with Virgin Holidays as a package.....i know I may pay more but seems the easiest option!

Thanks for any help you are able to give before I take the plunge and confirm flights!!!!
