We came back yesterday and what can I say... AMAZING!
NY is huge and we have done mostly everything you should do in NY (ESB, Rock, SoL etc)...
As for the Tickets: We got Tickets for "Promises, Promises" for half the price (roughly $60) with excellent view and I can HIGHLY recommend this show. Its amazing!

Apart from that: Thanks for this thread, it really helped planning our trip.
Hey, that's the show I wanna see :j- was it fab?? Did you get the tickets from TKTS? Just wondering whether to risk it and get mine there as the full price one are really expensive0 -

Yeah, we got the tickets at time square. We werent sure, which show to watch and one of the guys who is there to answer all your questions highly recommended the show. Paid a total of 180 Dollars for 3 tix.
Its a glammy, 60's Style Musical which will def NOT dissappoint you, I promise you that.
My gf recognized the actress Kristin Chenoweth from Glee and she was absolutly fab! There is also a bit after the break which includes Tony-Award winning Actress Katie Finneran... absolutly brilliant!
Put it that way: I do not really like any kind of musical but PotO, but Promises - Promises has blown me away and would go over and over again! I loved it!
As for the risk: I think I read somewhere it has been a sellout for the last couple of weeks....

Hi
Quick question, has anyone stopped in a bed and breakfast in New York, as we are going to be out most of the days we are there we were thinking that we really dont want to pay for a hotel. Any ideas?
Thanks

Ok, currently on about page 20, and getting there, but thought i might just ask a couple of questions if nobody minds... please point me where it has been answered if i have missed it!
we have won tickets to new york for 4 days, 3 nights in oct, staying at the hudson hotel inc. transfers etc, so we have no debate on where we are staying.
There are 2 adults, and was wondering what was about around there. i have been looking but am soooo confused. we have never even flown, so am trying to sort out insurances, passports, weight limits etc.
We are not big on museums(sp), but want to do the touristy things sol etc, but are quite happy to just take piccies from close by etc(hoping a good camera will help) we like the traditional steaks, burgers etc and are more comfortable in homely places than posh restaurants.
Sorry waffling, just getting sooooo confused, and hoping sombody might know the area and help!
oh, we are flying with delta, direct from heathrow to jfk, having never been on a plane, do we need to budget for earphones, movies etc or are they included? what about food/drink? sorry, just really overwhelmed!Ok, ok, i need to go back onto Weightwatchers, lost 7 stone..... 2 back on, this has to change.....Help!!!:eek:0 -
Ok and breath................first off well done on your win.
The hotel seems to have ok reviews here:
http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g60763-d223023-Reviews-Hudson_Hotel-New_York_City_New_York.html
however as I always say if you are spending loads of time in your hotel room you arent doing new york right!
You're going to be located right on the west edge of central park which means you have somewhere to chill out in easy reach when the hustle and bustle gets to much.
Re "touristy things" I would suggest you go and buy yourself a guide book or trawl through here, personally Im not a fan of esb i would rather do top of the rock as its less busy, cheaper and you get a better view over manhattan. I find the best way to discover a city though is to get there and get some comfy walking shoes on and get on with it, you'l be amazed at what you stumble across sometimes.
Re food you are kinda spoilt for choice in NY we are big fans of blue smoke, dallas bbq, and virgils for steaks burger etc I wouldnt call any of them homely but the food is good portions are large and prices are reasonable. For more homely places pop into greenwich village or meat packing district or soho etc.
Have a look on menupages where you can cater your needs by reviews/location/cost etc etc:
http://www.menupages.com/
never flown delta before so cant comment however its standard nowdays to have everything supplied on long haul flights.
Any other questions please ask awayLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
Well done on your win, Jodie114!
On my last 3 flights to the States, the airline has provided earphones. The inflight entertainment was also included along with the meal. All the airlines provided free soft drinks, but only one (Virgin Atlantic in this case) provided free alcohol. Have you applied for your ESTA?
I'd second what phatbear says, Top of the Rock is fantastic and walking is a great way to see things. We were a bit jetlagged and were up really early on our first day so we left the hotel early and walked for ages, really making the most of it. My feet were killing me, so comfy shoes are a must.
Have a fab time!From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0 -
aww thanks, not sorted out the esta yet, need a passport no. i believe and i am still sorting those out!
By homely, i meant down to earth i guess, i'm much more a jeans an t shirt girl than high heels and dresses so that type of place would really not be me.
I'm all for walking, but needed to know where to start! i am slightly limited on walking, with a dodgy knee and back, but will up the painkillers and alcohol!
What would be a good budget for meals and sightseeing (excluding clothing etc) based on bagels etc for breakfast / lunch and a nice meal in the evening(but not a big sit down meal)?Ok, ok, i need to go back onto Weightwatchers, lost 7 stone..... 2 back on, this has to change.....Help!!!:eek:0 -
I have been looking at The New Yorker for our Honeymoon - can I ask what you thought of it?
I love it at the New Yorker, i won't consider anything else. To me the location is perfect. There is a 24hr diner on site, a 24hr pharmacy acoss the road in case you forget any essentials and its only a short walk to the Empire state and Macys. The biggest selling point for me is the proximity to the subway lines. You are next to the 1,2,3,A,B,C lines which are the lines i travel on the most. I ve stayed at hotels before in New York where its been a 5-10 minute walk to the nearest line.
If you can afford to get a room with a view of the empire state...its so worth it. I stayed in one once and the view was stunning. However if you can't its not the end of the world...just take a trip to the top of the rockafeller centre for a perfect view0 -

Do you have a limited budget? When i was stuck in New York because of the volcano i was living on about $5 a day! I found a supermarket type shop and bought a bag of bagels, a jar of peanut butter and only drank water from the tap!
Food does vary on price depending where you go. Tourist spots such as Natural History museum and SOL, are quite expensive. But if you go to delis away from the tourist traps, prices are generally cheaper with larger portions. I found a cafe that sold Bagels for about a dollar and sandwiches from around $2. In the evening i generally eat in a 24hr diner next to the hotel i stay in. Costed about $15 per person. Also don't forget to budget in tipping when you go to restaurnts in the evening - its not included in the bill. I just generally double the tax and round up to the nearest dollar.
Regarding budgeting for sightseeing depends where you want to go? You can get a New York city pass for $79 per adult http://www.citypass.com/new-york
However they re not worth it if you don't visit the 6 attractions included and you may not have the time. E.g. i can easily spend a day at SOL and Ellis island when i m in New York, but depends on how much detail you like to take in. I d make a note of which attractions are must see for you and research on the internet. For most attractions you can purchase your tickets over the internet and print them off at home such as Empire State building, Top of the Rock, Circle line cruises. This is also good as it saves you time when you get there as you won't have to queue up for tickets.
Hope this helps!0 -
For those that like the New Yorker, it comes up quite frequently as a win on Priceline, often for as low as $100 per night. Whilst you can never guarantee what you'll get with PL, if you do your research you can often get what you are looking for.Gone ... or have I?0
