I have just returned from Christmas in NYC. We were there for a week and went everywhere. So any questions. please ask me. NYC is expensive, so I learnt to sort out the cheapest options.
A quick PM will bring me back to this thread, as I usually post in the Arms.

So do you have to buy new electrical equipment or do the hotels supply transformers?
The only things that will need to use mains electric will be the wifes hair straighteners and her blowdryer,i know most hotel rooms have a hair dryer but she likes to use her own.
It's easier for her to use the one provided and I speak as somebody who has carried her massive GHD Hairdryer all round the world. Due to the low voltage there are no benefits to bringing your own hairdryer, the ones in the hotels are fine, no matter the size, and are as powerful as you're going to get! Plus it's a waste of space!
I didn't have a problem with my GHD's, although I think you can unscrew the plug and there's an american plug there, I remember my hairdresser showing me! I think it's a bit fiddly tho!0 -
Can anybody recommend a good/practical guide for NewYork, would like a pocket size model if possible with bars, restaraunts etc.and if possible a map and a subway/underground map.
I bought the DK Eyewitness Pocket Map and Guide: New York City, and The Little Black Book of New York, 2016 Edition, but used neither as you can get a free NY map and a free subway map from your hotel. I ended up using the free ones. If they get tatty or lost, you can simply pick up a fresh one from the hotel.
For your purposes, you will probably find The Little Black Book of New York the most useful if you nevertheless still wish to buy a guide with maps and recommendations. I bought my copy from Amazon.Smiles are as perfect a gift as hugs...
..one size fits all... and nobody minds if you give it back.☆.。.:*・° Housework is so much easier without the clutter ☆.。.:*・°SPC No. 5180 -

Thanks for that info, the reason we will need it is not so much for major attractions but for good bars, diners, restaurants etc.
I have been writing down a lot of the names of recomended places from this site but as there are so many pages to read and take in i thought a good guide might be handy.0 -
OK a few tips for New York.
Hairdryers - I took my own with an adapter the first time I went to the USA, it overheated and and burnt out. So I bought both a hairdryer and curling tongs in the local supermarket. they have lasted years. The hairdryers provided in most hotels are very good.
Guides: I was very disappointed in the recommended bars and diners. One place that comes recommended is the Tic Tock Diner that is Located in: The New Yorker A Wyndham Hotel
Address: The New Yorker A Wyndham Hotel, 481 8th Ave, New York, NY 10001. The food is terrible and the rest rooms (Toilets) were in a terrible state. AVOID!!
I will post a breakdown of our costs later.0 -

(if your a tea drinker i would deffo take your normal teabags with you as most places out there only do twinnings breakfast tea). we also eat at a restaurant called brazil brazil there chicken stroganoff is lovely

Thanks for the info TAZ,we do not go till early March but have started planning early, locating places of interest, must do sites etc. the problem is locating good food /drinking establishments.
Do not want to eat in greasy spoon type diner but again we do not do fine dining.
Do not want to go to a bar full of hells angels ,etc. as we are both in our 60,s but used to travelling we are just being cautious.:o0 -
Can anybody tell me if you can actually enter the Chrysler building to look around the lobby etc. i know a lot of people visit it to photograph the outside and even just to admire it but wondered if going inside was allowed?0
-
as I recall you can get in the reception/lobby to see the murals and art deco ceiling
BUT you can't get beyond reception as the building is fully let to genuine businesses and there's no visitor deck etc.0
