I would wholly recommend looking at Big Apple Greeter if this has not been mentioned yet. Feb 2012 we had a tour on a Sunday I think it was. The guy (Richard?) was an archivist or journalist for the NY Times. It was an excellent experience.

Thanks for the tip, phatbear has also recomended this do you have to have a specific interest to book a Greeter or will they just show you around say the subway or bars if that is your interest?

So do you have to buy new electrical equipment or do the hotels supply transformers?
The only things that will need to use mains electric will be the wifes hair straighteners and her blowdryer,i know most hotel rooms have a hair dryer but she likes to use her own.

You can buy as US/UK adaptor on Amazon, in pound shops, supermarkets and numerous other places.

it may no longer be the case but about 7 years ago my ex's ghds were a tad hit and miss when we were in New York as they use alternating current as opposed to us using direct current, she claimed they never fully heated up.

after a quick read it appears all ghd mk 4's onwards are ok.

so in answer to your question just buy some adaptors online/poundland however in extremis almost all hotels ive stayed in around the world often have spare adaptors behind the front desk

Both countries use alternating current for mains electricity.

A cheap travel adapter will cope with the different physical design of mains plugs and sockets, but it probably won't handle the different voltages.

(With electronic devices the different mains frequency is sometimes important, and there are also different transmission standards for devices such as televisions.)

Yes sure, and that's almost certainly due to the lower voltage.

A UK device designed to work at 220v won't get as hot on US 110v.

BTW a US device designed to work at 110v will probably blow a fuse or something within itself if operated on UK 220v. Or it could even catch fire.
