Beyond the area I've described, I'd feel a bit nervous walking back to a hotel later in the evening.
So you wouldn't recommend anything too far away from Time Square then? Might have to re-think my options then, find a hotel that's a bit nearer. Is The Lexington Hotel really that far out then? The Shelburne, (Affinia), I believe is also in the same area and that was another hotel I looked at.
BIt's wouldn't have not wouldn't of, shouldn't have not shouldn't of and couldn't have not couldn't of. Geddit?0 -

That is what I like about www.hotel.com , you have no surprises. Unlike Booking.com , where they state that you pay the hotel on arrival. The cab from JFK cost $67, as there is no shuttle bus to http://www.affinia.com/shelburne.I stayed at that very hotel in Feb 2012( my rating will be on TA) I think. 4 nts before flying to Houston to visit and Aunty. Flew from Galsgow to JFK. Got the train from airport direct to Penn Station which was quick and easy both in and out. Walked from Penn station to the hotel but I guess a taxi from there would be pretty cheap if you wanted.
Hotel was well located in a safe neighbourhood in fact one thing that surprised me about NY was how safe I felt throughout my trip. Walked loads too.
My choice would be the train:
http://www.panynj.gov/airports/jfk-airtrain.htmlIf you go back on the BA Holidays web site i am pretty sure that the price quoted includes all taxes, etc.this will not include anything charged to your room.ie phone calls, room service etc.
Thanks for all your replies, I will check on BA site & see what it says. Thanks for all the tips as well, I am trying to be as MSE as possible, I have no idea of costs, I have emailed the hotel to ask if we can have one of the rooms with the kitchenette so we can have breakfast in the morning. No doubt I will have more questions to ask before I go. I had planned on getting train/airlink whatever its called as I had read on here somewhere that the airlink would be $5 then a 7 day pass for $37 dollars for unlimited bus/subway will do us the full week, I fully intend to use the subway where possible.:TGratitude is the best Attitude :T

The 7 day ticket is $31 The MTA website has an excellent journey planner you can type in Affinia Manhatten as a destination point and get the quickest routes from the airport, seems to be airtrain to Jamaica then an E train to Penn station then a 2 min walk.

Maybe a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge, we walked from Manhattan to Brooklyn and got the subway back but probably better to do it the other way, saves turning round to see the NY skyline.0

Ganga that looks like a nice laid back visit re big apple greeters they will meet you at your hotel and you dont pay for anything, the last one i had wouldnt even allow me to buy them a coffee.
I highly recommend you ask your BAG if you want recommendations on food when you visit your chosen area, for example im a bit of a foodie who loves art architecture and buying t shirts which no one else will probably have in the uk so he suggested shops to visit, buildings i may wish to revisit and told me about gallery openings in the LES where he was showing me aroundLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -

And look out for cyclists on the bridge as they dont take kindly to any trespass on their bike lanesLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
