  • Hello!
I know there is a real tipping culture in the States but as a frugal traveller I'm wondering if you would tip in non-restaraunt/taxi situations.

I was wondering if people would tip fruit cart vendors or street cart vendors? What about chinese takeaways in which I collect the food? I don't want to seem rude!

    Thanks for any advice :)

This simple rule helped me out... if you have to bring it to the register or the person did not have to move more then a three steps to help you... you don't have to tip. If some one brings it to you, you should tip.

Be very careful of short term rentals (less than 30 days) in NYC - they are illegal and you could find that the flat/apartment you've paid for doesn't exist or isn't available. If you want an apartment, there are apartment hotels available with kitchen/living room and bedroom space.

Only there a short time so a phone card may be best - any recommendations?

Also, are all the shops/museums etc open as normal on their Bank Holidays?

Dont be fooled into thinking because they advertise on Trip Advisor and say they are legal they arent!
Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!

My son was sent on a list minute tour, with the forces, to the US. I decided just 4 wks ago to go over because he will be in Maryland for over a week. We (Partner, mother, son's girlfriend and me) are flying to NY on Sunday, going to Baltimore Monday eve to meet up with son, going back to NY on the Friday (son coming to), son's going back on tour on the Monday are we are all flying back from NY to UK on the Tuesday/Wednesday.

I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has provided info etc on these pages it has been an absolute god send. The stress levels have been kept to a minmum because of it, re travelling/hotels/food etc, and some mistakes (thought of renting an apartment) have been avoided. Just counting down the 48 hours til we jet off!!

Does anyone have any moneysaving ideas on how stirling could make itself a little stronger by next week please?!?

I just used my normal uk mobile as it was quadband, saved messing about. But the charges can be steep.

I took my good lady up on her 40th birthday, after buying her a diamond ring and then getting her name in lights on broadway, how smooth am I, i timed it be up there 30mins before sunset and alas as the sun went down the fog/smog went up and covered the sunset ahhh well it was amazing seeing manhattan light up.

If you time it right and you're into amazing burgers and shakes you could pop to shake shack which is behind the natural history museum, and its a lot quieter than the flatiron shack.
How did you organise the lighting up? it's our silver anniversary when we are visiting next week

Due to the BA strike our flights are now with American Airlines, flying from Heathrow terminal 3 to JFK.

Any ideas what they are like?
