  • Joining this the thread as we've booked to go to New York for 5 nights next July followed by a repeat trip to Mexico. I know it'll be hot, but would love some recommendations for us and our 2 kids (7 and 4). I have the AMNH, TOTR, Intrepid museum, MOMA and a cruise to see SOL so far. Any moneysaving tips for these (May get one of the passes, but tbh not sure it'll be worth it).

Toys r us and the M&Ms store are also on the list. Any other suggestions. We're staying at the Best Western Hospitality House, got 5 nights for £1,200 including tax on expedia (and I'll get 12% cash back). We can always cancel if something better or cheaper comes along.

    Advice and tips welcome!

    Thanks for the tips everyone.
Night time still tricky, DS (17) is partially sighted and really struggles to see at night time and hates crowded places when low lit, I think he will enjoy the cinema (he seems to manage ok here, not much moving about) and the coffee bars. I think it will also be important to go to a hotel where there is wifi, at least if we go back quite early he can go on the internet.
Do the major stores open late or is that a daft question.

    thanks again to everyone
The E walks cinema complex on 42nd & 7th opposite Madame tussards next to BB Kings Blues Bar is a great place for the older teens . Used to have a cool hang out area with your ice creams / coffee / popcorn bars . My kids said it was a shame to go in and watch a film . She was 18 at the time
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world

Just back. Had 5 days with 9 and z6 year old. Central Park was good, play parks were fun. We actually visited 911 memorial and museum. It has been done so well and there is a special educational section with teachers for children. Maybe yours are too young? We are really glad we paid our respects.

Times Square is very bright, but also very crowded too mornings are brightly lit and quiet though

Yes lots of shops are open late - like Macys which stay open until 2130/2200 or later if they are having a sale/weekend

Does he like to swim? have you seen any hotels you like?

Someone has recommended The Benjamin, but would appreciate any advice.

Shopping will definitely be a vote winner (maybe not for my pocket!!)

    Hi everyone.
We are heading over in November.
I have read most of this thread, on and off.
Can I just ask what people think of the Tribeca Grand hotel? Any opinions on the Tribeca area to stay in.
    thanks

We liked it, several years ago, we stayed at the Cosmo with three teenagers and it did what we needed. Handy for the SI ferry, which proved an evening's diversion by going there and back again in the dark. Also watched a fantastic fireworks display from Battery Park, which was on SI. There was a big multiplex within walking distance which gave another couple of evening's entertainment - we were there in summer and it was too hot for much else, IMO.

    Any particular post?

See, there are so many hotels in NY that no-one can possibly give a recommendation without a few titbits of info: budget, how many in party, ages, 'mix' ie family or friends. After that, a few more titbits wouldn't hurt: when you're traveling, and what do you want to do / see / experience IN PARTICULAR. Given that there's excellent transport running 24/7, on one level it doesn't matter where the hotel is, until you want to take all your shopping back to your room, collapse and shower before heading out for a show. At that point, it matters a bit more.

If, on the other hand, you've got teenagers who want to lose themselves in electronic shops drooling over tech they're not going to buy, another teenager who wants to buy a guitar (don't ask), and you're the only one who appears to have read the guide books, you'll just amble around getting an increasing crick in your neck, admiring the architecture and wondering where you'll be able to find a cup of redbush tea. Answer: never found one in NYC.
