Can anyone recommend me a nice hotel in ny

I've been looking at the affinia shelbourne, but wouldn't mind a few others chucked into the bag.
I've looked on ta, but really can't decided, I'm going for 5 days next june and would like to get something booked soon.

    thanks

Here are my preferred in order
    Gansevoort Chelsea
    Hotel Roger
    Affinia Dumont

    What others have you seen?

I like the look of the
    Affinia shelbourne £1094
    Affinia Dumont £1088

and these are coming out at my price.

    the gotham £766
the jewel facing Rockefeller centre £871
    Hilton manhattan east £901
    the Kimberley £907
    san carlos £1017

all to have taxes and fees to add on.

And I've only looked at expedia for the moment, as I'd like to get a idea of some hotel and then just maybe have 5 or 7 that I need to price. I'd like to be nearish to times square, and I'd like a view of the city at night...if possible.

were going 8th june for 5 nights, and as it's our 1st visit, we don't know how much we should be paying for a room in June.
But we was told to book something soon, and something that we could cancel, and to continue to look incase a good deal come up better than what we will have booked.

    thanks

these are all bookable with expedia and free cancelation

    Hi

Trying to find a holiday for myself and my DS is becoming more and more challenging as the years pass. Something that we will both enjoy and where it is still okay to go with mum :o:o

We have eventually settled on NY.
I'm looking at a budget of £1,500 (spends on top of this) for four nights.
DS is taking his A levels next year, so probably looking at going in Feb '15 or the end of June.

Has anyone got any advice for a first timer going with a teenager, night times seem to be the time where we struggle to find things to do.

    thanks in advance

    Hello
The Dumont have rooms with amazing views called skyline suites.
Have a look at hotel websites directly and sign up for special offers too

Who did you book your flights with?

Ah he will certainly love it :)
That is a great budget - i' say maybe wait until June until he has finished and then can completley relax.

Are you going for shopping? If he loves shopping he will love it, and if he doesn't love shopping believe me he will be converted (based on experience)

Depending on how much you do in the day most evenings are spent chilling out dinners etc preparing for next day - you could go to
Times Square for dinner and enjoy the many sights and sounds
    A show
    Cinema
    Boat ride at night
    Night bus tour

Some of your attractions could be done at night e.g TOTR

We went a tad later in the summer, I don't know how hot it will be in June, but we were jolly glad to go to the cinema to cool down in the evenings ...

I'd agree with that. However don't book anything you can't cancel until you have his exam timetable!!! Or check with the school what the absolute latest latest date on which he could possibly remotely have an exam would be!

Ah yes, the shopping. DS3 insisted on going to a guitar shop, where I had to sit and listen to him trying out multiple guitars, and then he bought one, which raised the problem of how to get it home! (Answer: you fix a capo at the body end of the neck, and remove the neck from the body. You pack the body, suitably wrapped, in your hand luggage, and put the neck, suitably wrapped, in your suitcase. Or you ask your mother to do this.)

Meanwhile DH and the older two were browsing electronics.

AND I NEVER GOT TO GO TO TIFFANYS OR MACYS OR ANYWHERE I WANTED TO GO SHOPPING! (Yes, I'm shouting. They are not going to be allowed to forget it. Even the lady on checkin on the way home asked if we realised we'd got an increased baggage allowance because we'd upgraded.)

The Staten Island Ferry at night was great, we did that after the cinema one night and again it was lovely and cool. Then there was an impressive fireworks display on SI which we could watch from the other side of the water (volume much more manageable!)

The boys chose to hire cycles for Central Park, which you might or might not enjoy together.
Signature removed for peace of mind

Any advice greatly appreciated to this problem

Daughter checked out of Marriott, Time Square five days ago. On checking in, they asked for her bank card (I know some hotels open a pending transaction with a nominal charge to ensure payment in case of room damage or other room charges, although I would be interested to know if they do it for all guests or maybe because they were two youngish girls).

They did not tell my daughter they had put a pending transaction of 250 dollars against her account which meant some of her spending money in the card was frozen the whole time she was away. They have still not released the transaction from their end even though hotel confirmed to me there are no charges due at all.

Anyone else experienced this and how long before money was released?

I think it is up to the bank now, once they release the money I don't think they control the speed. Might be worth contacting the bank, though not sure what they can do.

I have never noticed when mine came back (every hotel I have stayed in has taken a hold), but I always provide a credit card, so no actual money is taken and I don't notice!

  • Thanks for the tips everyone.
Night time still tricky, DS (17) is partially sighted and really struggles to see at night time and hates crowded places when low lit, I think he will enjoy the cinema (he seems to manage ok here, not much moving about) and the coffee bars. I think it will also be important to go to a hotel where there is wifi, at least if we go back quite early he can go on the internet.
Do the major stores open late or is that a daft question.

    thanks again to everyone
