I've read a few tripadvisor threads on rates, but thought I'd get some views from here... We've booked the best western hospitality house in midtown east for 5 nights next July (school hols). Total cost with expedia is £1,100 (with cash back) for 2 adults 2 children and includes breakfast. I've got a cancellable rate, so if anything better comes along we can change. Do you think it's likely we'll get better for the money (or similar for less?)It's a one bed apartment, 800square ft (which I think is pretty big for Manhattan.0

Look about what you can do whilst there - presume flights and hotel now booked - relax :cool:0 -
Very excited to be going to New York for the first time in November!
Have learned a lot by reading all the posts here but still have a couple of questions.
We'll be arriving at JFK airport. Our hotel is the Edison Times Square. Can anyone help with the best way to get to the city centre on public transport?
Thanks.0 -
Depending on the number of you travelling ! But Yellow cab for first timers. Exit arrivals following Ground transportation signs and Taxi. Join the line and tell the uniformed dispatcher number travelling and destination, which will be midtown. Have the Hotel name and address Avenue and street on a piece of paper to hand. Hotel Edison
228 West 47th Street (btw. Broadway & 8th Ave)
It is a fixed rate in the cab, but expect to pay between $65 - $70 which includes tolls and tip !
Ignore anyone offering limo rides or a cheaper rate (may not be licensed and have insurance etc)
First morning you'll be up early so use the Cafe Edison for breakfast and sit at the counter if you can !!!
Enjoy NYC it's a jungle !

Thanks for your answers. taxi seems pretty expensive. Has anyone used the shuttles from the airport to Manhattan? Are some better than others?0

The problem with shuttles is you could be on the bus for hours while everyone else gets dropped of at their hotels.
personally i would airtrain it and then subwayLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -

Seconded (or thirded? Not sure)
I was a 'first timer' when I went in Jan and I loved the airtrain followed by the subway. Total cost was $15 for 2 of us as opposed to the $70 taxi fare. I think we changed at Jamaica/Queens and got the subway to the north of Midtown for our hotel
It's dead easy, honest!0 -
