We would have been content to fly again with Continental Airlines, judging them by the flight from Manchester to Newark, NJ. However, they showed their true colours when the ash cloud became an issue on the 14 April and Continental staff just abandoned the air terminal. There was no help whatsoever. Never again. I hope that they feel named and thoroughly ashamed. People waited hours in queues to be reallocated seats. We flew home 11 days late and not once were we offered a penny piece towards refreshments etc.
LindaHi I always fly with continental to Newark from Edinburgh and I have to say they are my prefered choice of airline. Drinks are free as long as they are non alcoholic and you usually get a meal and then a snack before you land which is normally a Turkey ham and cheese roll with a bag of plain crisps. You do get earphones, but I cant remember if you have to pay as I normally have my own. They have both adult and childrens movies which you can rewind and pause etc free of charge (some airlines charge you for this) and also games and Tv shows. You can use Seat guru to make sure you are happy with your seats as they are easily changable on continentals website. Also check in on line as it means when you return from Newark you dont have as much time to wait in line.
We usually get the Amtrack to New York as it is easy to navigate and cheaper for us as there is only two of us.
What about the Bronx zoo for something to do?0 -
Too late, your trip to NY will be a distant memory. Continental airlines is alright if everything is alright. However, when the ash from the volcano became an issue on 14 April and all flights were cancelled we were due to take off from Newark. Continental just ran away and hid and offered no help whatsoever. Their customer service was dreadful. Lesson learnt - do not get stranded in a non EU country with a non EU airline, they don't offer you so much as a sandwich and we were stranded for ELEVEN DAYS.:(scousemanblue wrote: »Hi there,
Im a normal reader only of MSE forums but my wife has arranged a surprise trip to New York for 3 of us which would include our 8 year old.
Im looking for any hints and tips of other members who have been in the same boat as us and what they done whilst they were there.
Due to flight times, we have 2 full days free with 2 half days. We have one plan arranged which is a horse carriage ride round Central Park and a trip to the zoo time permitting.
ANy help would be appreciated.
Also, we are flying with Continental to Newark - anyone any experience of them ?0 -

Hi
Been to NYC a few times and posted here previously but need some different advice. I have previously booked just a flight (stay with relatives in Queens) or booked flight and hotel separate. I now wanna go either October or December but wondered if I should book a package deal cos of the volcano issue? Problem is, this woudl mean using Virgin and flying from London whereas I live one hour from Manchester airport and flight from there normally so getting to London would mean more expense?
Any thoughts? Looking to go in October half term (18-23 Oct maybe - lots of schools are off the following week as my sis gets 2 weeks off) or Dec (18-23 - really pricey I'm guessing???)
Thanks!0 -
Morning guys,I have a couple of questions now that my weeks holiday is getting nearer(5th July)..we will be staying at The New Yorker hotel,
Q1)will they provide bath and hand towels?plus toiletries.
Q2)I will have to take 2 injections whilst away, these need to be stored in a fridge, would it be reasonable to Email the hotel and ask if they will supply a fridge, and what should i expect to pay for this?(or is there a chance they will supply it free if for medical reasons?
Q3)The exchange rate is pretty low at the moment, could people who have been recently estimate how much a family of 3 (2 adults and a 12tr old) should budget for meals daily?...nothing fancy, maybe bagel type breakfast,pizza/sandwich type lunch with a proper evening meal.?
Thanks guys, hope everyone has a fab time in NYC. xSlimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.

You can book the Virgin package holiday from Manchester (however they do not use Virgin Atlantic, I think its Delta)Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!0 -
Philippa36 wrote: »Century 21 isn't much cheaper for cosmetics/perfume - they don't discount but there is a good range of products there and worth a look if you're after something specific. I think it was the same price as the department stores though. Macy's/Bloomingdales sales assistants hassle you a lot more than in Century 21.
They're all a little hit and miss, but definitely worth a look in any/all that you have time to go in (Century 21/Loehmanns/Daffys/Filenes Basement).
As thatsfabulous already said, there are Sephora's everywhere - some bigger stores than others, I didn't go in one that was 'better' than any other though.
Have to disagree on that one. Bought my wife some Clinique aromatics perfume at Century 21- came to £25, price here was about £54. Huge saving.0 -
Yes hand and bath towels, dont recall many toiletries maybe just a couple.cooking-mama wrote: »Morning guys,I have a couple of questions now that my weeks holiday is getting nearer(5th July)..we will be staying at The New Yorker hotel,

If you ask they give you a coffee maker ( with coffee too) for free so if they have fridges I cant see them charging for it however I would email in advance yes to ask.
I cant comment on estimate cost for family as I only ever go with one other person however bagels from street venders and deli's can work out very cheap just a couple of dollars from some so what we tend to do is go to places like that for breakfast. We liked a chain called pax:
https://www.paxfood.com/ as its cheap & no tips so not spending very much.
If you go to tick tock diner which is next to new yorker you will end up spending much more for a family breakfast compared to the deli's.New York ♥..........These street will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you.
No place in the world that can compare ♥ 2nd October 2010 ♥0
