Okay, for a week I would usually take

    jeans
    trousers
    1 pair shoes
    1 pair of boots
    9 tops
    grunderwear ( socks/pants/bras)
    razor
    medication
    hair straightners

This being said we don't usually go out on an evening because we are too tired from everything else.

I also take socks to wear with shoes and trousers because it makes your shoes more comfortable (something I would never do here). I also invest in the nice comfort socks from m and s.

    Hi there,

Im a normal reader only of MSE forums but my wife has arranged a surprise trip to New York for 3 of us which would include our 8 year old.

Im looking for any hints and tips of other members who have been in the same boat as us and what they done whilst they were there.

Due to flight times, we have 2 full days free with 2 half days. We have one plan arranged which is a horse carriage ride round Central Park and a trip to the zoo time permitting.

    ANy help would be appreciated.

Also, we are flying with Continental to Newark - anyone any experience of them ?

Your question is somewhat wooly for a direct response, you say you have an 8year old in tow so thats some info.

For example I could recommend a walk around central park then shake shack for lunch then a look around the american museum of natural history, where they filmed night in the museum, however I have no idea if you or your kid would like that.

You should get an idea of what you want to do then someone can tweek your itineary for you.

You mention a carriage ride through central park, now on certain other forums this is a BIIIIIIIIG no no, there are plenty of reports about mistreatment of the horses etc add to that its expensive and they can only stick to the road system personally I would get yourself a map and walk, you save money see more and probably wont have rotten veg chucked at you by animal rights bods
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right

FAO Schwarz on 5th Avenue and Toys R Us on Times Square are good bets to keep the 8 year old entertained! (and just as much fun for the adults!) A Big Apple Greeter (google it!) may be a good idea too - you could ask them to do a child friendly version of NY for you!

Were you thinking the Bronx Zoo or the central park zoo? with your timescales I'd got for the central park one.

Hi I always fly with continental to Newark from Edinburgh and I have to say they are my prefered choice of airline. Drinks are free as long as they are non alcoholic and you usually get a meal and then a snack before you land which is normally a Turkey ham and cheese roll with a bag of plain crisps. You do get earphones, but I cant remember if you have to pay as I normally have my own. They have both adult and childrens movies which you can rewind and pause etc free of charge (some airlines charge you for this) and also games and Tv shows. You can use Seat guru to make sure you are happy with your seats as they are easily changable on continentals website. Also check in on line as it means when you return from Newark you dont have as much time to wait in line.
We usually get the Amtrack to New York as it is easy to navigate and cheaper for us as there is only two of us.

What about the Bronx zoo for something to do?

They are free, but also rubbish! Very tinny and cancel hardly any background noise.

On our outbound flight the seat had a one pin jack, so I just used my own head phones. On the way back though it was a 2 pin jack - however the free headphones have an adaptor on them, so you can just use this then plug your own headphones into it.

The flight was good though, would happily use them again :)
Common sense just isn't that common any more....
