Just in case anyone is looking for accomodation that isn't jaw droppingly expensive, but is still convienientish for New York, have a look at Homewood Suites, Edgewater, New Jersey.

The original price is very acceptable, but when breakfast, free wifi, equipped kitchen, free parking, free drinks and food (Mon-Thur, limited menu), free shuttle bus to water taxi/light rail station for all of your group are included - the value becomes outstanding.

I've not stayed at this hotel before (not been to NJ/NJ before!) so I can't vouch for this hotel -- but I've stayed in plenty of Homewoods before (cheers neilbond007 for the original tip) and they have never been less than very good and usually excellent, for our family group and ALWAYS very good value, particularly for the seperate bedroom/suite accommodation that they give.

We are in the throes of planning our first ever trip to New York, got cheap flight, after being bumped off flight home from tampa last year, is used the vouchers. Seriously thinking about booking an apartment with https://www.airbnb.com ( I am a terrible sleeper and often get up in the middle of the night, have not stayed in a hotel for ages because of this) have found a great apartment about 5 mins away from times square, has any one used this website at all!
Also as a surprise for DH would love to book a car to collect us from airport, so any recommendations would be gratefully received. Thank you

Bad idea, covered many times before on this thread

Me too, try a suite hotel, rooms that give you a separate bedroom and small sitting room/lounge, they are quite common in the USA and there are several chains that do these*. They are not very much more expensive, generally, than a standard room - not like the traditional image of a luxurious penthouse suite that would be very expensive. (You can select suites in the filters of a Tripadvisor hotel search).

*One that is often recommended on here is Country Inn and Suites in Long Island City (10 mins on subway into mid-town)
    You could also look at:
    Fairfield Inn & Suites
    Embassy Suites
    Homewood Suites
    Springhill Suites
    Staybridge Suites
    Doubletree Suites
    Candlewood Suites
    Affinia hotels have suites
and I'm sure there are many others

Thank you so much, we had no idea it was illegal, just looked at the details of the apartment that we were interested in, and it states that if asked we are to tell them we are friends of the owner, got the website from lonely planets New York guide!!!!!

Will look for a suite maybe. I am now so glad that I asked the question here. Thank you for your quick response's.
