Why - do you have mobility issues or something? If not, New York is a city much like any big UK city. If you can cope fine here you can cope over there!

Nothing wrong with preferring to spend time with a grandchild you are visiting over sightseeing :)
I'm glad I visited NYC a couple of times and enjoyed it but it isn't on my Must Return list.

One thing your offspring might be more receptive to than mine were, I bought several different cheap guide books / 'top ten' guides, including a Dorling Kindersley one which was quite child friendly. I wanted the boys to pick out things they particularly wanted to do, before we went. But we just had to wing it in the end.

One of the things we do each year as a family is sit around the table and take turns in writing down the things that we would like to do. Naturally the children don't have much concept on 'things NY' so we'll need to prompt them a bit.

The USS Intrepid is already on the list.:D

Is it just me or have prices gone up?

I'm trying to find something reasonable from Dublin or Belfast. Flights have went up a good couple of hundred pounds since last year.

Now I usually search on Expedia - I have done a price comparison on my own spreadsheet of costs from Dublin and Belfast on different dates (using same identified hotels) and for 2 and 3 persons. Some reasonable prices however these are not direct. They are flying through London (from Dub) or Glasgow (from Belfast) .. If I click direct they come up £200-300 more expensive. Meh! There's also not a great deal of difference between flying from London (when searching it on its own), so probably worth just getting something from Dub/Belfast that flies through one of those stops.

My sister's a newly qualified teacher and starts first teaching in September, so we are limited in that we can only go from end of June to end of August - some time in between then. The holiday is a present for her for graduating (lucky girl!).

Is there a website I can search cheapest flights throughout this period? What about hotels? I've literally went through almost every week from end of June to end of August. I've actually picked a few out and we might roll with them but just wondering is there any other methods you guys would search?

I guess I'm just pretty taken aback by how expensive the flights have got from Belfast/Dublin... not used to them being so high! Anyone any idea what would have caused this increase?

If its for this year, possibly because you have left it so late !

Have searched throughout the whole year and going by the prices I have found for a few weeks against prices for Sept, Dec, April (2015) - there's not a huge difference tbh.

In fact, flights for next April are more expensive than those in a few weeks..

Unfortunately, however, this was a last minute decision for my sister before she heads off to start her new job in England in September.

In general, prices have gone up over the last few years ... most likely to do with fuel prices etc.

We love going to places we've seen in movies, NYC is great for that generally, although DD decided against visiting the Natural History Museum after she discovered that it was nothing like it's portrayed in 'Night In The Museum' and doesn't have many of the exhibits that are in the film :(:D

I didn't say there was... They are the ones who said they "need" to go to New York, not me!

Perhaps it was an incorrect interpretation but them saying they felt "nervous" going on their own made me think they actually want to go to New York but are hesitant to go without others.

We stayed back in 2011 and thought it was fantastic. Extremely friendly staff and ideal location. Quite a small hotel though with only 6 rooms per floor, but that was better for us. Just to note that the rooms are quite small, but not really a problem given that we were out most of the time.
