Murph, it's one of those times when you're just going to have to 'go with the flow' :D

When we went it was for our daughter, as a post-GCSE reward, and I fully expected to hate it as much as I do most other cities. Actually, it was fine and I did enjoy it, but 3 days was plenty for me and we did NYC in the first few days so I had the rest of the trip to look forward to.

    Where are you staying?

I was under the mistaken impression that an arrival airport in a city and a departure airport were just that - where you arrive and where you leave from, but Oh no, what they are, are places that you have to explore. By law. Apparently.

We're arriving in Boston and spending 12 delightful days exploring the joys of Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island & Conneticut.

Then we're staying in Edgewater, New Jersey before heading home.

New York really isn't so bad! I'm not a city person at all but I enjoyed it, and while I can see how it's not everyones cup of tea, I really can't imagine it being too horrific for you!

You're right Callum, but we're holidaying with a 10 yr year old and a 7 year old and cities don't tent to be as successful for the family, as being in rural areas -- although Washington DC was really enjoyable.

After successfull managing to avoid all things New York, for the 20+ years that I've been travelling to America, this year I'm spending the last 2 and a bit days (dragged kicking and screaming and very much against my will) in the NY area.*** I have had one small victory so far, and we're staying in NJ, not NY.

So now I've got the pleasure of picking up on the good advice, thoughts and experiences of the people who have previously posted on this thread.

    Murph

When I was looking at room rates, I thought "what are people talkking about when they say that NY is expensive -- then I realised they were room rates per night NOT per week

*** I'll love it. It's just going to take time to adjust.

As noted in the reply above, just go with the flow!!!

I had the same "lack of enthusiasm" in 2011 when my wife and daughter announced we were going to NY. Have to say that my opinion changed completely, and we all really enjoyed it, so much that we returned last year for a few days.

On our first visit, we also combined it with a visit to Maine (fantastically relaxing), then onto Boston for a few nights before returning to JFK for our flight home.

I guess it depends how much they want to see the sights, but I'm sure they'd both love visiting the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building/Rockefeller Centre and Central Park at the very least.

New York's obviously more hectic than Washington, but I think you'll be fine!

Both Boston and NYC have very child friendly things to do-My son still talks about throwing the tea into the river in Boston. Unlike most other US cities both are very walkable (you wouldn't drive into Manhattan anyway parking is extortionate).
We stayed at the Residence Inn Rutherford which was great 2 bedroom suite with 2 bathrooms -and the bus into Manhattan stopped right outside (about a 20 min ride). Even though it was December and snowy there were no issues. I'd do it again in preference to paying the crazy Manhattan prices for hotels.

Oh and we all loved the Duck Tour in New York .

I rather felt the same way when we went, but it was OK. Our boys were teenagers, mind you, and we ended up spending an extra night there so they could cycle round Central Park while we went to MoMA.

One thing your offspring might be more receptive to than mine were, I bought several different cheap guide books / 'top ten' guides, including a Dorling Kindersley one which was quite child friendly. I wanted the boys to pick out things they particularly wanted to do, before we went. But we just had to wing it in the end.

Now that DS lives in Princeton we 'need' to go to New York. Stupidly, I feel a bit nervous about going on our own.

One trouble us that I want to spend every minute we are in the USA with the grandsons.

Why - do you have mobility issues or something? If not, New York is a city much like any big UK city. If you can cope fine here you can cope over there!
