Thanks M4RKM, I was doing it the wrong way, i was caching my maps before i saved my places! doh

tbh, get your phone unlocked, and pay £15 for a threeuk PAYG sim, and you'll have unlimited data and you don't have to bother doing stuff like that... *no brainer*

Other option is the CityMaps2Go app which you download maps of entire cities before heading on holiday. Most providers now offer decent data bundles for use overseas if you buy in advance too.

    Lets compare

Vodafone - 25MB Data Per Day - £5 per day
    O2 - 50MB Total Data - £40 total per month
    O2 - 200MB Total Data - £120 total per month
    EE & T-Mobile - 20MB Data - £3 - per day
    EE, Orange & T-Mobile - 100MB Data - £10 per day
    EE & T-Mobile - 200MB Data - £50 for 30 days.
    Orange - 150MB Data - £75 for 30 days
Three PAYG - £15 unlimited data for 1 month
Three Contract - As per UK Prices - No Roaming Charges

Hmm... I sure as hell don't want to be on any of those bundles bar the last two.

Maybe. They sometimes have them in vending machines but in arrivals.

Stupidly expensive. You should go to a three store today.

That's not a comprehensive list. You've only highlighted some poor ones, so I'm unsure what your point is.
You maybe need to shop around a little more.

sounds like a great plan, but will the 3 data sim work ok in the USA, assuming its meant for 3's UK signal etc
  • I posted two reviews on tripadvisor of the hotels I stayed in for anyone who is interested. They were the One UN Hotel and the Z New York which was in Long Island city.

The first is One UN : http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g60763-d209382-r188616277-ONE_UN_New_York-New_York_City_New_York.html

The second is the Z New York : http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g48080-d2163379-r188615705-Z_New_York_Hotel-Long_Island_City_New_York.html

If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer them :)

That makes no sense. The three sim offers free roaming. It'll connect to a network and it knows you're in the USA so doesn't cost any money as it's part of their feel at home roaming plan, which means you get all your data as if you were in the UK. Calls and texts too..

Over on TA, someone took my recommendation and it's working perfectly for them in the USA right now!

If you read page 1 of this thread, it'll give you a link to a guide I wrote telling you how to get into and around Manhattan.

Unsurprisingly, it's nearly identical what is on TA.

ManhattAn is easy to get into on public transport.. I'd do that to be honest..
