    HI Guys,

We've just booked to be going for 5 days and staying in the Moderne hotel on West 55th street.
We're landing at JFK and just trying to decide on transfers, seem to be lots of bad reviews on most of the typical services, so what's best to do? use a train and a cab?

    Thanks

    Ed

You say "we've" depends how many are in that "we've" for example a cab is gonna be a lot cheaper if there are four of you (per person cost)

air train/subway is gonna be cheapest, and could be quickest but remember a lot of subway stations dont have lifts/escalators so you may struggle with your bags

cab/carmel cars is best as its door to door and you get a view on the drive in but obviously its a lot more expensive.

Paying off before you get there, no, usually not - but you could get a prepaid currency card and load that up with the required amount if your budgetary control isn't all there...

If you go down the prepaid currency card be aware that the hotel will want to put a reserve on more than the price of the room, in case you use other services e.g. mini bar. When you check out they will only charge you for what you actually used.

This means you will need to have more money on the card than just the price of the rooms. How much more depends on the hotel. We spoke to the manager in advance and asked how much more we needed to have on the card.
  • Good to know :) my budgetary control is fine, but I feel a lot better knowing when things are paid so I'd much rather have it paid before I arrived. 3 months today!

Nope no need, I use my prepaid for the hotel, use my normal CC for the authorisation hold - they will let you do this at check in.

    works perfectly :)

Do you need a credit card for the hotel to hold on to? I only have a debit card.

Nope they dont hold on to your credit card they pre-authorise some money for the stay, in case of damage or incidentals.

you may which to contact the hotel you're staying in to ensure they will accept debit cards, and if they do the money they pre-charge to it will be tied up until its released from your card after check out

Could be a few hundred £'s, depends on the length of the stay etc, you wont know until you contact the hotel.
