We are first timers going for a week next March Sunday 9th to Sunday 16th - this also covers the St Patricks weekend celebrations and the flights are now booked and paid for !.

Would I be better waiting for hotel prices to come down or as it covers the St Patricks weekend is that unlikely ? Ideally I dont want to book until mid December as we prefer paying up front before we go....

Lastly as first timers should we looking at Manhatton central/times square or use the Metro and stay elsewhere within 15-20 minutes ? Thanks !

Stayaway from Times Square - the subway, for a week ticket is dirt cheap and very effective. You'll find a much more authentic stay away from TS.

Im hoping to visit NYC in October 2014. prices are not avail yet but perhaps based on this year when in September is best to go? I would prefer to leave from Edinburgh but would do Glasgow if the price saved was worth it.

I would prefer to pay for flights first, gives me time to save, then the hotel. I have read that you can get a hotel as long as there is no cancellation charge, cancel it if another lower price comes up and rebook.

If the savings were enough, against the cost of a subway ticket, we could look at a hotel, outside manhattan...if they are ok.

    Based on 2 adults.
  • i appreciate this is a horribly vague and multi-variable question to answer..! i was thinking of going to NYC for a 3/4 night stay sometime in November (probably earlier/mid to avoid thanksgiving)... what average kind of per-person-price are you looking at for flights+hotel?

i understand you can spend $50-$500+ per night, but I'm just looking for a rough idea... am I going to be able to find something sub-£1000 for 2 people, or is it going to be more?

    $50 a night really?

You are probably looking closer to £1000 each

Go and have a look on expedia for packages to give you a more exact price

We did this both this year and back in 2011 when we visited New York. We booked through hotels.com who also have a price match guarantee - we actually saved £200 in 2011 when our hotel, The Distrikt, came up on the same website at the much cheaper price.

We also booked through a cashback site and got 10% cashback, plus when we booked for this year, we also received a £50 M&S voucher.

Well the front page of this thread says from $20 :D

I appreciate I can go on various travel sites, bit that's not going to tell me what I could expect to pay, on average.

I was hoping I might get some idea on price from NYC regulars.

Ok here's a question... If the stars aligned correctly and there was a flight sale, etc. could I expect to get a 3/4 night stay for 2, for £500pp? Or is that the realms of fantasy?

Well if the stars aligned etc etc I'd hope to win the lottery but its probably not gonna happen, just like I think its highly unlikely £500 per person is gonna happen, you may get £750'ish each.

Since starting to go to NY some 5 years ago I have paid £1200 upto £2500 for two of us and all of these trips were booked well in advance as a package with expedia, after doing a lot of shopping about to get the best price.

So my top tip would be to price up dates yourself through expedia etc, also remember you have the potential for some money back through topcashback or quidco.

Try and factor in a saturday night as this will bring the prices down a fair bit then once youve got a firm date and price pop back here and someone may be able to help

I got a 4 night stay for £550 back in 2009. I think with flight prices as they are since then it will prob be more realistic to get something for £650pp

Manhattan is probably best for a first time stay, Times Square is where all the tourists flock, and it's busy, but also expensive. I'd start looking at hotels now, and see if there is anything you can pay on checkout. I don't think you'll see many pre-paid deals just yet. It's a little early. You could look at Long Island City, if your budget isn't big enough for Manhattan.

Flights you can pay for separately. They'll go on sale 330 days before the flight, so the earliest you can book them will be sometime in November.

Hotels, you should see availability at some of them around the same time, and you can get a cancellable rate, you won't have to pay until you check out...

Flights you're looking around £450 minimum each to fly out, so that leaves only £100 for your hotel budget, so totally unrealistic. Even if there is availability at somewhere like the Country Inn & Suites in Long Island City, you'll be looking at around $150 before taxes per night.
