  • Would love some help putting together a POA for my wives surprise trip.

Should be in Newark at 1300 on the Monday but need to travel to Long Island to the Hotel. Googled it but doesn't seem to be that easy, any help would be appreciated.

We have 6 days and I am trying to fit in the below:

    Ice Skating at the Rock
SATC Tour (its my wives trip not mine!)
    Statue of Liberty
    Empire State
    Top of the Rock
    Ground Zero
    Macys / Bloomingdales
To go and see a show.

I would ideally like to prebook most things if possible (and if its cheaper, just to ensure we are not continually wondering around aimlessly). Any suggestions would be welcome.

    Thanks

I take it your hotel is in Long Island City, rather than Long Island? That's part of Queens and very easy to get too using public transport. They are in very different areas, but the name can cause confusion for those not familiar with New York.

To get to Long Island City take the airtrain/NJ Transit from the airport to New York Penn Station. From there take the 1 train uptown to 42nd street and change to the N, Q, R or 7 trains that all take you to Long Island City. Queensboro Plaza tends to be the station nearest most hotels, but it would be best to check what is your closest station before you travel.

of course public transport, ie the airtrain and then jumping on the subway is going to be cheaper.

however if this is your first trip I would suggest getting a cab.

yes i know this is a moneysaving site but sometimes you have to pay out a bit extra for a bit extra and even after half a dozen trips to NY the initial glimpse of the manhattan skyline and then watching it get closer and then being surrounded by is worth the outlay, ok i admit after trip 2 i started to use the airtrain but when i used a cab again on trip 6 the view still made me smile.

110% agree with this on the first trip to NYC :)

Hello! Am new on here and first time writing on a forum! Holiday is all booked for the Xmas periods...now counting down the months! Staying in Red Hook, BK.
Can I please ask if anyone has any restaurants/diners/food trucks recommendations for BK and Manhattan?
Hubbie and I are in our late 20s, like most types of food as long as its not raw meat/fish, with a range of prices? Max $100pp.
If you could recommend if you have previously eaten there for breakfast/lunch/dinner that would be mucho helpful along with locations so I can drop pins!

    Thanks!

  • Hey everyone, it's been such a long time since I've been on here! I'm looking for some help with a trip to New York. I'm going on the 28th Nov - 5th December and am looking for a hotel. Everything I'm finding seems to be really expensive. I went last year for 4 days over thanksgiving and paid a decent price for a hotel, around 400 I think. All I'm finding now is around 1200+ for even a cheap hotel in a good location. By location I would like to be in walking distance to Times Square and fifth avenue. Do hotels do offers closer to the time, like Las Vegas does, or am I better booking sooner rather than later as far as NYC is concerned? I stupidly paid 479 for my flight to find it dropped £100 the next day after I'd been watching it for so long (in incognito so they wouldn't see that I was), so I don't want it to happen with my hotel! Any recommendations or tips would be greatly appreciated.

You're going for a week - there's very little chance of you seeing $100 a night rooms, but £100 rooms ($150) is a bit more realistic - you've got to factor in the tax and occupancy fees too.

There will be offers nearer the time, its all capacity driven and there's enough on Manhattan to allow you to wait - whenever we've been to NYC we book the flights, sort out the esta's and book the car - after that we wait for a good deal on the hotels, I think we booked the week before last time an saved 50% on booking early.

    Places to look...

Hotels.com/Expedia, and go through cashback sites to get 10% back (Top Cashback)
Travelzoo.com - worth signing up for - weekly mails every weds - currently too early for Nov discounts though
Bookit.com - US based hotel site, tends to have specific deals.

If you're feeling brave... Hotwire.com or Priceline.com offer unknown hotels by price based on rating if you're willing to take the punt

I must admit, aside from the cheesy advert hotelscombined.co.uk has proved to be really quite useful to allow comparison of the comparison sites, just book it through a comparison site via a cashbacksite.

You also might want to give a serious consideration to an apartment let through an OFFICIAL SITE - money savings might be possible...
