Hi, having looked at the BA sale site I have found the following deal:
InterContinental NEW YORK BARCLAY, 4 nights toward the end of Nov inc flight for £634.00, any thoughts, have to book by tomorrow 5th?0 -
Hi Goonie (Love the film btw),
How exciting that you are going this week! I am planning a holiday in December and we just passed the 100 day mark yesterday. Am uber eager and just soo excited! I have been reading the earlier posts in this thread and felt like we need an injection of EXCITEMENT about holiday planning for NYC!
I am not sure as yet if I would like to do both the ESB and TOTR, but for ESB I think I want to go at late like just before it closes and then daytime for TOTR, but thats just my personal opinion (as is the rest of this post...)
Ground Zero= 9/11 memorial
For the memorial I think I would want to visit during the daylight hours, I'm not sure if it is lit up at night time, but I think it would be quite poignant to see it in natural daylight.
If people can write one thing that they miss the most about NYC (food related is doubly welcome!) I am hoping this will start some conversation!
TC
Hi, thanks for the reply. I know, really exciting! What's more exciting is we go to Vegas first for 4 nights then fly to New York for 4 nights so going to be an amazing experience.
I haven't been to NYC before (or Vegas for that matter) so really looking forward to it, have put a lot of planning into it to try and make sure we fit in everything we want to do
I think we want to do both the Rockefeller and the Empire State, I know they're both quite similar but we just want to do as much as possible0 -
Got back from my first trip to NY last week.
ESB we went up at 11pm and still queued for an hour or so - it had rained the previous evening so guess this played a part
TOTR We did sun and stars, got there for opening and it was empty, had one side of one of the viewing platforms to ourselves - went up again for sunset, still no queuing but was a lot busier.
9/11 Memorial - we visited the memorial visitor center before hand and i have to say that it was the most moving thing i have ever experienced, you see it on tv and sort of think it wont affect you but it really did.
The highlight of our trip was a sunset cruise with these people:

You can pick up discounted tickets from here

It really was amazing and would recommend it to anyone.
I've seen the tickets online for Sun & Stars at the Rockefeller which sounds good so may purchase them before we go
I thought the 9/11 memorial would be an emotional thing but something you need to see I suppose0 -
Hiya,
I'm going to NYC next July for 3/4 days, flying home on Fri August 1st (arriving either Mon 28th or Tues 29th, not sure yet). I'm going to be on my own. Does anybody have any tips for good activities to do when you're by yourself? I've been before (once, last November, with my Mum) and want to do a couple of things again (TOTR in different weather!) and there are a few other things I know I want to check out (the High Line) and I want to catch a couple of Broadway shows. Doing things alone that people generally do with friends/family really doesn't bother me, I'm fine with that, but wondered if there was anything that's a particularly good experience that I might otherwise miss?
Also, because I'm going on my own and want to minimise costs I'm happy to stay in a hostel or hostel-style hotel. I've looked at a few and I'm really looking to get a private room in a hostel, I don't care if it has a shared bathroom but I'll be coming in from 5 nights in a 4-bed dorm in San Diego and I'll probably just want somewhere that I can be on my own.
I've found the Chelsea Hostel to be the cheapest so far (through hostelworld) and as it's almost a year away I'm not in a huge rush to book, though for an £18 deposit I might book Chelsea and keep looking over the next few months just to secure something. Anyway - does anybody know any good hostels/ones to avoid?
I'd like to stay in Manhattan, but it doesn't have to be close to Times Square or anything. When I was there in November we stayed on West 71st and still walked everywhere right down to Brooklyn Bridge so I'm happy for it to be a little way out.0 -

Just to mention that you often (usually?) have to stay overnight on a Saturday to get cheaper flight prices. That might not matter if you're already in the states but thought I'd mention it in case it impacted you.
I can't help with hostels. We just got back this weekend, and I loved the HighLine and Chelsea Market :T also, Central Park?0 -
Thanks for your reply Mark, won't bother with The Box House then.0

Thanks - it won't affect me as I'm flying in to LAX Tuesday 22nd and out from JFK August 1st - just need to book the one way ticket from San Diego (and decide which day!) and I've got enough United airmiles to do that for $2.50!0 -
