I should be in NYC that time. Luckily, you'll catch the last few days of New York City Beer Week!! WOOO!!!!! (That's is the ONLY reason why I'll be in NYC!)hornetsmad wrote: »We're staying at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott in Times Square, and I was just wondering if it would be best/cheaper to book a car from the airport or to catch the AirTrain from the airport to Jamaica and then go to Penn State?
Even though it is in the name, Fairfield Inn & Suites isn't in Times Square, it's on West 40th Street between 8th and 9th Ave, which is around half a mile away. Good thing about this is that it is close to the Subway at Port Authority, which is on the E train, which you can get from Sutphin Boulevard, when you get off the AirTrain at Jamaica.
It is cheaper to go by train / subway, (not LIRR, because LIRR goes into Penn Station, and that's some 7 blocks away, so slightly less convenient), so go with the AirTrain to Jamaica, then the E train to 42nd Street.
If you look at an individual cost, this would be $5 each for the AirTrain and then $2.25 for the Subway, however, hopefully you'll be getting 1 week Subway cards each at $29, so the trip into Manhattan will be on them. But, the best thing to is to load 1 Pay Per Ride Metrocard with $37.40 on it and you'll get $40.01 on it, and that means you'll have 8 rides (two for everyone in your party!).
Once you're through, jump on the E train, and get off at 42nd Street, and walk the 2 blocks to your hotel.
Easier may be a taxi, it holds 4, luggage could be tight, and it probably won't be any quicker, it'll be $52 fixed, plus toll $5, and tip 20% ($10.40) so overall you're looking at $67.40 (round up to $70). The same on the return. A Car Service from Carmel or Dial 7 will be slightly cheaper, but less convenient...
Phew, hope I haven't bored you with all that detail.

I just used stub hub to buy tickets for the nets game, really good prices (a bit above face value).
If I want to see Jersey Boys will I be better off waiting till I get there? The only day I can go is Tuesday March 14. If so is going the day of the show the cheapest way of getting tickets?
Have you checked broadwaybox for discounts and availability?0 -
Here is an interesting article, about illegal apartment rentals, and more specifically airbnb.

Yes, NYC Beer Week starts 22nd Feb. I'll post more info when it's freely available.. Can't wait myself, I'm probably in NYC 22nd - 28th, not sure yet really, and won't be booking anytime soon (work/moving house at the moment may take priority than a holiday right now!)0 -

Hi
First a big thanks to all the posters here, I posted back in sept/oct got great advice then trawled the threads for further info. We are just back from a fantastic NYC trip & here's a brief summary which hopefully will help others:)
Booked in mid November with last minute, got a package as worked out best. Flew Lhr to JFK economy arriving 1.15 pm with delta 29.12.12 return flight JFK to Lhr delta business class depart 6.25pm 3.1.13. Stayed at hampton inn Times Square north 5 nights. Myself, my husband (50th birthday on New Year's Day) and our 6 year old daughter. Paid just under £4k
Flights were great, particularly the return - my first business class flight & I loved it, as d my daughter who commented that the return plane was much nicer than the one going!
Hotel was fine, I wanted a hotel near Central Park, near subways. We got free breakfast which with kids is a great deal and free wifi. The room was big, very clean, location was good for what we wanted.
New Year's Eve we went out fr dinner on 9th ave then back to hotel for extra clothes and into the park. There was a stage, music, dancing, a fancy dress race and midnight fireworks. We had a fun, family friendly evening.
Also did ice skating, toys r us, disney, and fao to keep daughter happy. Did cruise for views of Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn bridge etc Top of the Rock, general sightseeing, shopping. Theatre trip to see mamma Mia, got tickets from tkts booth in Times Square.
Ate out in smaller bars so that we got a bit of nightlife experience despite travelling with child.
Used subway no problems
Had a fantastic trip and now planning when to go again, will need to save up for a few years and would love to try it when warmer although the weather was ok and we all coped fine. Was beautiful to walk around Central Park on the Sunday morning with the park covered in snow, blue sky and sunshine.
Would highly recommend trump tower on 5th ave for toilets!
Thanks again for all the great info here and if I can help anybody planning a NYE trip and /or a trip with kids please ask:)0 -
I'm confused. Is Newark Penn station the same as New York Penn station?
No it isn't, Newark Penn is the first station stop once you board the train at Newark Airport Station. New York Penn Station is in Manhattan and will be the final stop. What's gone will never come back. But it exists when you think of it ...0
