Has anyone here been on their own on a trip to New York? I've asked a couple of friends, but no-one can come, so looks like I'll be going on my own.

Is it just too sad to even contemplate, or do you think I'd still get a lot out of it?

I've been to NYC four times and went twice on my own. My fifth trip will be on my own but a friend is currently living there so it will be semi-solo.
The only problem I had was eating out as some places didn't want a person on their own taking up a table of two but the majority of places were fine. Everything else was brilliant and I could do what I wanted when I wanted.

I did get rather drunk one night on my first trip which was solo, I got lost on the subway but I was helped out and ended up safely back in my hostel. I wouldn't do that again though as I'm much more sensible
    and grown up :D

Thats great news Maria, I was only thinking of you earlier on- wondering if you was there already.
Sounds like they have it well planned and may even work out better for you if it means an extra few hours in NY.

Excellent! What about a 35 year old single female, would general consensus be it was a safe thing to do or totally stupid?

I visited New York solo for the first time last year and absolutely loved the experience. Any apprehension I may have had about being alone in a new city disappeared the moment I arrived. I enjoyed the freedom of being able to do what I wanted, when I wanted.

I found NYC to be very accommodating to the solo diner. If you don’t feel comfortable sitting alone at a table, there are plenty of good restaurants with communal tables or where you can eat at the bar/counter.

Manhattan is easy to navigate and the subway is a great way to get around. I never once felt unsafe.

    I’m sure you’ll have a blast! :)

Thanks for the supportive comments. Think I probably will go, don't see why I should miss out just because my mates are boring!!

I've been to NYC alone a few times, and am going again in July (should have been next week - thanks Unite  ). I am sure you will have a great time, and you have already identified the benefit of travelling alone - no boring mates to disrupt your plans! ;)
    Gone ... or have I?

2 Things from me today guys,

    1) What are your best and cheapest experiences in getting from Newark Airport to Manhattan?

    2) What recommendations would you have for helicopter rides? Am still searching...

Going in early June for 5 days, staying in Gem Hotel on 8th Ave.

    All help much appreciated. Thanks

From Newark to Manhattan - check out Trip Advisor

I've never done a helicopter ride.
